Overnight stocks were mixed in Asia while Europe traded higher, continuing a second strong day there. futures are higher.
Treasury Secretary Jack Lew is appearing before the Senate Finance Committee now and talking about the potential impact that a government default would have. However, some news accounts are focusing on the chance that Republicans may accept a short term increase in the debt ceiling to produce further discussions with Obama. Others, like this one, note that the discussion has shifted so far from the health care issue that started it all that the fight has lost its meaning and perhaps momentum.
Signs of the shaky ground that Washington is on over the default prospect are starting to be seen, however. Rates on short term government debt . Treasury bills of less than one year maturity to 3% from 1%. Here in Minnesota, the day looks quieter than yesterday. Fastenal kicked off the fall earnings season with a solid report but one that disappointed investors. The big wave of earnings reports comes next week.
Today in Minneapolis is a day long conference in which promising small businesses present themselves to private and public investors. The Minnesota Venture and Finance Conference has helped launch many successful Minnesota companies in the past. Details are here at the organizer’s web site. Graphic designers and artists from across the nation are in Minneapolis for the AIGA’s annual conference. Details are here. Called Head Heart Hand, it’s a typical industry gathering. But while many trade shows and conventions have their highlight on the first day, this conference has a climactic closing party with a competition for designers. It takes place at the Walker Art Center on Saturday night.

BREAKING September real estate data for the Twin Cities is strong
Recovery continued across the Minneapolis St. Paul metropolitan housing market last month even with our first taste of fall weather. Sellers regained some enthusiasm as new listings rose 19.3 percent to 6,372, marking the sixth consecutive year over year increase in [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] monthly [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] seller activity. Buyers closed on 4,667 [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] homes, a 14.5 percent increase over last September. Consumers have 15,968 properties from which to choose 7.1 percent fewer than September 2024 but 22.5 percent more than in January 2024.
