Just before I began following the 2 Day Diet plan, after the Daily Mail first unveiled it in February, I was given a rather alarming diagnosis. I’d been feeling tired and a bit low, not at all my usual energetic and enthusiastic self.

I thought it might be SAD Seasonal Affective Disorder after the dark, cold and miserable winter that seemed never ending. But I decided to see my GP just to be sure there was nothing more serious going on.

Anyone who’s had cancer in the past, as I have, tends to think the worst is bound to happen that you’re tired and achey because it’s back. It wasn’t, thank heaven. But my doctor thought I should have a blood test just to be certain there was nothing else wearing me down.

Sure enough, we discovered I was in the early stages of glucose intolerance. My **** was not dealing with sugar as it should have been, something that is not uncommon in those who are middle aged and overweight (with a particular passion for treacle sponge pudding and custard).

Aside from my waistline, I now had an added incentive to say no to any offer of a pudding and to lay off honey, jam, sweets or sugary drinks.

The 2 Day Diet diet for just two consecutive days a week, then eat normally for five seemed the perfect way to get in shape without ever going hungry. I’ll be interested to see the impact it’s had on my glucose tolerance when I’m next tested in a year.

The health benefits of the diet seem so compelling, particularly the impact on insulin regulation and the prevention of any sneaky little breast cancer cells daring to return.

And, apart from a couple of small temptation moments, it has been incredibly easy to follow, despite Him Indoors’s frequent lapses into the Wagon Wheels.

My cheats came only this week when I had two birthdays to celebrate in five days. It used to be three husband first, then older son, then Dad. Even now, six years after his death, I can’t help raising a glass to my father.

So more wine than the recommended ten units a week was consumed. Then there was the boeuf bourguignon, the creamy mashed [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] potatoes and the home made chocolate truffles . . .

So it would have been a most ungrateful mother who said: ‘Sorry, love, I’m on a diet, I’ll just have the salad,’ wouldn’t it?

The food was, frankly, fantastic, and to have sons who understand the importance of ****ing and enjoy giving pleasure to their loved ones through food is such a triumph.

But it was when I was faced with such treats that I realised how much my attitude to food had changed. For the first time ever, my appetite seemed to be under control.

I had a small portion of the main course and didn’t feel jealous or deprived as I watched the rest of my family plough their way through a mini mountain of food.

When it came to the chocolate truffles (the best I’ve ever eaten and that’s not just maternal pride talking), I ate just one. And it was enough. A month ago I’d have merrily tucked in to as many as I was allowed. The family was impressed and the scales showed no noticeable gain. Result!

As for sticking to the regime on non celebratory days, it really couldn’t be easier. My diet days are generally Monday and Tuesday a welcome recovery from the weekend. I make it Sunday and Monday if I know I’m going out to eat on the Tuesday evening.

Here’s where it gets interesting because I am absolutely not alone in following the diet. A phone call to any number of friends to arrange an evening out now generally begins: ‘What are your diet days?’

We’re not only juggling busy diaries for work and family, but trying to synchronise diet days, too!

We choose restaurants where they serve Mediterranean style food and keep an eye on each other’s consumption: no bread unless it’s wholemeal, plenty of fish and veg, no pud and a glass rather than a bottle of wine. We’re saving a small fortune.

So far the results are impressive four weeks and half a stone gone, the kind of steady, sensible, two pounds a week weight loss that’s not uncommon in a trustworthy diet generally recommended by doctors.

The 2 Day Diet doesn’t really feel like a diet, either; it’s more a healthy eating plan that seems satisfying and appears to be reducing my appetite, particularly for sweet things.

Wherever I go people are talking about the 2 Day Diet. A colleague at the hospital where I’m a non executive director laughingly told me about a fellow doctor who’d asked him if he’d heard about ‘this 2 Day Diet’. My colleague had been tipped off about the diet by the cancer specialists behind it, so had already been doing it for a whole year!

He had lost tons of weight, was now back in trousers he’d worn when he first married and had never felt healthier. He looks so marvellous, glowing with health and energy, that I reckon it won’t be long before all the doctors are doing it.
