East Midlands town set for newspaper circulation battle

A circulation war is in prospect in a Northamptonshire town with three [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] local newspapers all competing for readers.

The past month has seen the launch of the Corby Extra as a fortnightly publication in the town, together with the decision by Johnston Press to take the Northants Evening Telegraph weekly.

Now a third contender is set to enter the ring in the town in the shape of The Corby Eye, whose founders say they want to focus on news about the town.

The Eye is being launched by friends Kevin Sheen and Joe O who say they have grown tired of the press the town sometimes receives.

Kevin quit his job as an events manager at The Chartered Management Institution and JoeO left his sales job at a recruitment company to concentrate on the monthly free title which has a print run of 4,000 and is funded through advertising.

The pair who haveno formal journalism trainingclaim it is the only Corby paper, despite the recent launch of the Corby Extra by Extra Newspapers earlier this month.

Said Kevin: and I are Corby born and bred and had grown weary of the seemingly endless bad press Corby had been receiving both locally and nationally and decided a true portrait of the town needed to be both painted and printed.

Eye, as it is fast becoming known, is by Corby and about Corby and its borough. It is printed in Corby; it promotes Corby; it, hopefully, inspires Corby and, above all, it recognises the good in the people of Corby.

He added: contains nothing but good news and positive stories, it acknowledges unsung heroes and endeavours to promote the fantastic, but sometimes unrecognised, good work that the police, the council and all the local charities do in and around the borough. Kevin: is praise indeed to us that other publications have jumped on our news, community based newspaper idea and we welcome anything and everything that promotes Corby. newspaper is also available as an online publication.

It mainly rewritten press releases, full of news and a lot of generic filler stuff. It also very thin.

And The Eye sounds like it going to be very similar to Extra but free, so it will clearly put Extra out of business in the town.

There simply isn room for all of them in a town like Corby.

The only paper doing news will inevitably get hurt it lose readers and ad revenue, more jobs may have to go, and the community becomes even more poorly served due to fewer journalists.

My own paper lost 1,000 readers overnight when a news only free launched. It folded four months later and all it achieved was damaging profits enough so we lost an ad rep and part time reporter, and several hundred people stopped buying their local paper. Police negotiators have had contact with a hostage taker in the cafe where an unspecified number of people have been held for hours, said New South Wales Police Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn.

Three people ran out of a Sydney cafe where an unidentified person or people had taken Hostages Monday, CNN affiliate Seven Network reported.

Hundreds of police officers on Monday shut down a usually bustling area in the heart of Sydney, where an unconfirmed number of people are being held hostage in a popular cafe.

Chilling images from local media showed people, believed to be hostages, with their hands pressed against the glass of the Lindt Chocolate Cafe in Sydney’s central business district.

Footage showed them holding up a black flag with Arabic writing on it that reads: "There is no God but God and Mohammed is the prophet of God."

Authorities said many of the details about the situation remained unclear, including the number of people inside the cafe and the motivations of the hostage taker.

Police: ‘We are being tested today’

"We don’t know whether this is politically motivated, although obviously there are some indications that it could be," Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott told reporters.

The Islamic writing on the banner stoked fears that the crisis in Sydney could be linked to extremists. Australia, which is part of the international coalition fighting the terrorist group ISIS in the Middle East, said in September that it had foiled a plot by Islamic militants to carry out a public execution.

New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said it wasn’t yet clear whether the situation at the cafe was a terrorist event but that police are on "a footing that would be consistent with a terrorist *****."

He said police haven’t so far had direct contact with the armed hostage taker, who appears to have taken staff and customers captive as people were heading to work on Monday morning in the Martin Place area.

Chris Kenny, an editor at The Australian newspaper, said he was at the cafe Monday morning. He left shortly before the siege started.

"As police quickly swarmed and cleared the area, I turned to see a man against the window, facing out with his hands raised," he wrote in his account of the incident. "At first I was relieved thinking this was the gunman responding to police — but soon the awful realisation the customers were being forced against the windows."

CNN affiliate Seven Network reported that at least 13 people are being held at the cafe, but Scipione declined to say how many were in there.

Police barricaded off streets and evacuated buildings near the cafe, bringing an eerie quiet to a district typically buzzing with pedestrians and vehicles.

The Martin Place train station was shut down, according to police. They urged people to stay away from the area, but some local office workers gathered at the scene to try to find out what was going on.

The buildings evacuated included U.S. Consulate General, said Alicia Edwards, a spokeswoman. All personnel have been accounted for, although it’s not known whether there are any U.S. citizens among the hostages. U.S. President Barack Obama has been briefed on the situation.

This is a major chord built on the fifth note of a given major scale, with another note (the "seventh") tacked onto the end of it. Well, there’s a method to my madness. We sometimes decry the imaginative paucity of modern summer movies’ endless reliance on reboots, remakes, sequels and prequels; but at their best they can leverage a lingering awareness of ancient canon into a unique satisfaction. We take deep pleasure in the newly envisioned becoming of a story we already know and value. This applies to historical films as well. Who can forget that moment in John Ford’s Young Mr. Lincoln when Henry Fonda starts up the road, walking out of the movie and into legend? So now, instead, we have Young Mr. Ape (the gloomy and hyper intelligent chimpanzee Caesar, performed by motion capture maven Andy Serkis with the ready assistance of a team of CG animators), coming into his own, discovering his destiny, and bringing forth the future history that was first realized on the big screen in 1968 by Franklin Schaffner, Charlton Heston and the gang. I’ve never been a particular partisan of the Apes movies, but they’ve seeped into my consciousness all the same, and there’s a subtle pleasure in seeing the various echoes and intimations of the 43 year old classic here: the origins of the tripartite chimpanzee gorilla orangutan social order, visual hints of the helmeted cavalry who chased Heston through the fields, and no doubt many other homages that I’m not fan enough to have caught. Fan service can quite easily become belabored and self indulgent a substitute for real storytelling but when delivered with a light, deft touch, as here, it’s a delectable seasoning.

The story still needs to be solid, of course, and Rise doesn’t disappoint on that level either. In fact, its depiction of Caesar’s character arc is one of the purest expressions of the "hero’s journey" that I’ve seen in recent movies. of those innumerable screenwriting self [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] help guides breaks down a common protagonist arc into three phases: orphan, wanderer, and warrior (with ‘martyr’ as an optional fourth). Hackneyed though it may be, it’s a template that works pretty well in popular entertainment, probably because it recapitulates in grander and simpler terms the journey we all take from childhood to adulthood and self actualization. Rise’s swift, efficient screenwriting gets the "orphan" phase out of the way in a hurry, but lingers patiently on the later stages of Caesar’s growth, from a beloved pet of James Franco’s genetic scientist, to a brutalized captive, and eventually to the leader of a primate rebellion. Each step in Caesar’s evolution is marked with a strong, satisfying emotional cadence that gives the impression of fine, firm carpentry.

All of this paints the way for the dazzling third act, which is a remarkable sustained action sequence marred only by its dependence on CG visual effects that seldom manage to avoid a certain cartoony quality. This is exacerbated by some unnecessary directorial flourishes by Wyatt, who creates large, elaborately choreographed shots following the apes as they swing and jump around the streets of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. The shots are giddily satisfying in the moment, but make the CG ness of it all a bit too apparent, and remind us that no physical camera could have captured such scenes. It’s a minor quibble, though. One of the great pleasures of the climactic battle is that its scale is not too large: it’s really just about a hundred apes against a few dozen cops. It’s only the beginning, and because it gives our imagination free rein to envision future scenarios and escalation, it’s all the more satisfying.

What Rises’s climax captures is the unique, grim pleasure of watching the shit hitting the fan, the chickens coming home to roost, the social order cracking, the Winter Palace being stormed. After all, our particular breed of apes can be said to have made rather a hash of this planet, and maybe Caesar’s gang will prove better custodians. It’s a simplistic, indulgent thought, but one that seems fitting for the twenty minutes you’re watching this remarkable consummation unfold onscreen. And that, too, is testament to the film’s persuasive storytelling.

Inside Thor Steinar: London outfitter to the extreme right

A controversial clothing brand strongly associated with the extreme right in Europe has opened a high street store in London, Channel 4 News can reveal.

Thor Steinar, the favoured brand of hardline right wingers in Germany, has opened a shop in North London called the Viking Thor shop – but locals may be unaware of its right-wing roots.
The shop has been operating from Ballards Lane in North Finchley since late last month, bringing clothing heavily associated with European far-right street movements to the UK.
The owner told Channel 4 News that he is not linked to the far right in any way, and promised to have posts on the white power ***site Stormfront promoting his new shop removed. * but has used emblems that echo Nazi symbolism?

When contacted Thor Steinar head office said it had "no interest" in commenting on the new shop in the heart of a multicultural London community with a sizeable Jewish population.

Banned brand

The Thor Steinar brand has faced bans in the German Bundestag, in several football stadium and members of the far-right German National Democratic Party have been expelled from parliament for wearing the brand.

Its clothes were banned outright in Germany in 2024 because of the logo’s similarity to symbols worn by the Nazi SS – but the company has rebranded since then.

In March 2024 the label drew global controversy when the company opened a shop called Brevik in Saxony. It was accused of naming the store after far-right mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik.

The brand claimed it was ****d in honour of the Norwegian town of Brevik in Oslo but later changed the **** and removed the sign.
Above the door at the North London Viking store, an ambiguous Wolfsangel-style Nordic rune is proudly displayed.

The company was launched in October 2024 and was initially ****d in Königs Wusterhausen, German. In 2024 it moved to Dubai – provoking outrage from some of its extreme right customers who threatened a boycott.

The arrival of the shop was welcomed by the white power ***site Stormfront, where users posted boasting that "London gets its first white nationalist clothing shop". A number of users pledged to visit the store.
One poster responded: "I hate North London. It’s full of Jews", while a number of users made comments about shooting Jewish people.
Local Conservative MP Mike Freer told Channel 4 News; "I am in contact with the Community Security Trust and local groups to ascertain what can be done.
"However, at present the shop may be unwelcome, but doesn’t yet appear to have acted illegally."

While the company claims it is not owned by the far right, reports in the German press have repeatedly indicated the clothing was created from the far-right scene in east Germany.

The shop sells goods from jackets to t-shirts emblazoned with the brand’s **** and logo. One t-shirt reads "White shark", another shows a man holding an automatic weapon and reads "last man standing".
The clothes regularly feature Vikings and Nordic themes – mythology which plays a central role in the extreme right’s racial purist views.

The Norwegian government filed a complaint against the use of the national flag in February 2024.
Thor Steinar shops in Germany have been repeatedly targeted by anti-fascist protests and repeatedly vandalised.
Earlier this month in Hanover 350 protesters gathered outside a Thor Steinar store to protest against what they see as a "right wing lifestyle store".

A German clothing brand favoured by Neo-Nazis in Europe, whose goods were banned because of their similarity to logos worn by SS officers, has opened a high-street store in the heart of London’s Jewish community.

The Viking Thor Shop, which opened in Finchley, North London a fortnight ago, is an outlet for Thor Steinar, a controversial brand whose products are strongly associated with far-right street groups and football hooligans.

The Ballards Lane store is situated yards from the office of the UK’s Chief Rabbi. Jewish and Islamic groups in the multicultural community have expressed concerns that the shop will attract far-right supporters and inflame tensions. But the store’s manager denied any neo-Nazi associations and claimed he was simply selling leisurewear.

The Thor Steinar brand has faced bans in the German Bundestag and across several football stadiums.
In 2024, eight members of the far-right German National Democratic Party were expelled from Saxony’s state parliament for wearing the brand’s T-shirts, which display runic symbols and Nordic themes popular with neo-Nazis.
After a 2024 ban in Germany, the company rebranded its original logo which bore a similarity to symbols worn by the Nazi SS.
The Finchley shop displays a Wolfsangel-style Nordic rune above the door, and variations of the symbol, which was adopted by some Waffen-SS units, feature on the brand’s T-shirts and hoodies.

One T-shirt on sale shows a man holding an automatic weapon and reads “last man standing”.
Users on the white power ***site Stormfront claimed “London gets its first white nationalist clothing shop”.
The office of Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis is ****d a few doors away, as is the Islamic Association of North London, a mosque which serves the large local Muslim population.

A spokesman for the Community Security Trust, a charity which provides security advice for the UK Jewish community, said: “This is a multi-cultural area with very few problems from racism and neo-Nazism and the like. This shop is not welcome here and the sooner it moves on the better.”

Store owner Zsolt Mogyorodi* said he was not racist and had opened the store to serve a local eastern European community with whom the brand is popular.

Mogyorodi told The Independent: “I don’t know what is wrong with our clothes, they are just normal outdoor clothes. I can’t stop stupid people like football hooligans from wearing them.”
He denied any neo-Nazi link: “We welcome all kinds of customers in the shop. The Nazi thing is a silly old story from years ago and the brand has changed since then.”

Mike Freer, MP for Finchley and Golders Green, said that while the shop might be “unwelcome” there was as yet no evidence that it was operating illegally.

Passers-by said they found the shop and its clientele intimidating and considered its ********, situated between a number of Asian-owned shops and Afghan restaurants, “provocative”.
