Wasabi Sushi

Anyone who actually eats sushi on a regular basis and understands what sushi is about will know that it’s actually all about the rice in the roll and the nigiri. Yes, fresh fish is important but properly and I cannot emphasize enough about the properly made sushi rice is the utmost importance. There’s a reason why in Japan, sushi chefs are relegated to making sushi rice for 10 years before they can even touch any fish! It sounds simple but you gotta make the rice right!

so let’s jump to Wasabi one of the [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] "best" and higher priced sushi restaurants that should know better in terms of executing sushi technique. Well, we got mushy pasty tasting rice in a $20 specialty roll. One bite in, the ****ure of the rice was so bad, you could hardly focus the rest of the roll. Sent the roll back and told the chef that it was bad rice. Well, apparently, he didn’t care or he doesn’t know what good and bad sushi rice is cause he said it was "fine". Wow. It’s unfortunate that the chef’s ineptness ruined our evening because the serving staff agreed that the rice was too wet. The roll was taken off our bill but we left with such a bad impression of Wasabi a place that can be hit and miss but was our preferred sushi place in the city. Our server was good and tried to make the best of the situation but I can’t continue dining at a place that’s so cavalier and so off their mark in their sushi making skills.

I like Wasabi but it’s not my fav sushi place in the city. They can be a bit pretentious at times especially at the Taylor Avenue ********. But their decor and plating is always beautiful. Their rolls are okay but I usually prefer their appetizers like the tuna nachos, soft ***** crab salad and new style sashimi.

I’ve ordered the Kobe beef here and was quite disappointed with what I received especially when with what they were charging. I’ve had Kobe before and it’s always melt in your mouth amazement but the Kobe I had here was watery and had no flavour at all. Wonder if I was duped?

I don’t frequent Wasabi too often but when I do, I really enjoy their signature dishes and various cold and hot dishes because they are always unique. And I love the Broadway ******** because they have a screened patio area. Though they could work on getting some new patio chairs as the current ones are very uncomfortable.

The hostess was cold and lacked personality [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] not surprising because their staff here can be very hit and miss. This unfortunately is common at all three Wasabi ********s. We’ve had great servers and really snobby ones. Luckily our server for the night was friendly, likable and knowledgeable.

They’ve updated their menus recently and some of the special dishes are now on the regular menu.

Half dozen fresh oysters ($16) excellent seasonal [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] oysters, I forgot the name but they were super plump and yummy especially with the ginger and yuzu like sauce. you get 9 thinly sliced fish that’s seared with hot virgin olive oil, and topped with soy, ginger, sesame seeds, garlic and green onions. Yum.

Tuna nachos ($14) another fave. Spicy sesame tuna with tobiko, avocado, sesame seeds and jalapeo on crispy nachos. I love the ****ures and the hint of heat from the jalapeo. I could eat a plate of these.

Soft ***** crab salad ($18) fried soft ***** crab served on organic mixed greens with fresh mango, mandarin orange segments and avocado with a very well balanced ginger dressing. The crab was a bit smaller than I remember but it was a nice summery dish. Toro was rich and buttery as expected but unfortunately, the toro looked very mangled. It was as if some very untrained chef with a very dull knife sliced up the nigiri.

Icy spicy roll ($12) one of their signature rolls where they slice a cucumber so thin and use it in lieu of the nori. A very *******ing roll filled with tuna with a little punch of heat from the sriracha.

East meets West roll ($24) use to be a special but is now on the regular menu. The justification for the price is the lobster that’s in it. There’s wild salmon on top, and inside the roll there’s avocado, mango and lobster. I found this roll to be quite bland surprisingly as nothing really stood out and the lobster [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] was a bit over*****d. I would not order this again.

Wild Salmon Ceviche ($14) they have a bunch of new ceviche items on the menu. This one sounded interest as included [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] sliced red onions, scallions and tomatoes along with the salmon ceviche. The flavours were dull and I didn’t like the tomatoes with this dish. I would skip this one.

Great martinis lychee tini and cucumber martini ($8 each).

A lovely way to spend a warm summery night on the patio eating sushi. It’s a pricey place but for the most part, many of [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] the dishes are unique so you won’t get it at other sushi places. There are some misses and I hate that service is not consistent but was very happy that we had a great server recently.

This place serves up good food but there’s always something that’s a bit off so I never find it a completely satisfying meal.

Their hostess and servers use to be more cold and snooty but I’ve seen improvements over the years. They’re definitely saying hi and being more welcoming so kudos to that. One thing they still need to improve on is to tell the customer the price of the specials.

Drinks are always great here love the zentini lovely green tea in the drink makes me think it’s healthy even though there’s vodka in it!

Sushi rolls are always done well here tightly wrapped, good ingredients but obviously on the pricier end. The special rolls that they never tell you the price is usually $20+.

Service on a recent visit was nice but the kitchen was obviously slow or backed up because it took FOREVER for our order of oysters to come out. Seriously, it’s raw oysters, it should come out as fast as it’s shucked. Then my fave tuna nachos were not up to par as the nacho tasted a tad stale. The icy spicy roll had too much sirracha on it so that overpowered the tuna and cucumber completely. Our server seemed to be running off her feet from serving too many tables in the lower level dining area.

Overall, when you’re paying $150+ for two people, it’s really disappointing when table service is spotty and food service is painfully slow.
