Shailene Woodley: I’m Not a Feminist "Because I Love Men”

What would Tris Prior say? Divergent‘s Shailene Woodley became the latest famous woman to distance herself from the F word, feminism, in a Time article on May 5. The Fault in Our Stars actress, 22, says she doesn’t consider herself to be a feminist, "Because I Love men."

"I think the idea of ‘raise women to power, take the men away from the power’ is never going to work out because you need balance," she explained to Time. "With myself, I’m very in touch with my masculine side. And I’m 50 percent feminine and 50 percent masculine, same as I think a lot of us are. Also I think that if men went down and women rose to power, that wouldn’t work either. We have to have a fine balance."

Over the past few years, Woodley has made a **** for herself in film after years of appearing on ABC Family’s drama The Secret Life of the American Teenager. She received a Golden Globe nomination for her role in 2024’s The Descendants, and soon after signed on to star as the headstrong Tris Prior in the YA Divergent series’ film adaptations.

Just because she doesn’t consider herself a feminist, however, doesn’t mean she can’t appreciate women. In fact, she thinks the bigger problem exists between women.

"My biggest thing is really sisterhood more than feminism," she continued. "I don’t know how we as women expect men to respect us because we don’t even seem to respect each other. There’s so much jealousy, so much comparison and envy. And ‘This girl did this to me and that girl did that to me.’ And it’s just so silly and heartbreaking in a way."
