Sent Home From soccer practice For Dying Hair Blue

Brentwood Junior high school officials asked Ariel Davila to go away Monday when she located school with newly dyed blue hair a violation from the school dress code for the affiliation with gang colors, 9 News reports.

Although district policy does not have an explicit provision on hair color, the school’s own dress code specifically prohibits students from dying their head of hair "unnaturally red or blue." Ariel was not suspended, but told to look home until she re dyed her hair to a permissible color.

Greeley Evans Weld County School District 6 spokesperson Theresa Myers tells 9 News that this school’s decision had not been to punish Ariel on suspicion that she’s connected with a gang, but she could become a gang target for her hair. Still, the Davilas require a public apology.

"It’s form of something which makes me mad. It angers me," father Antonio Rogers said. "It’s not suitable for me."

Ariel is one of numerous students nationwide [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] who may have faced school action for changing her hair color. Structured student Rheanne Sargent was handed in school suspension last October for dying her hair pink for Cancers of the breast Awareness Month. School officials said your ex violated clothes code, which prohibits non human hair color.

Another South Carolina student was suspended the last April for dying her hair partially red. Hannah Adams received a full week of at school suspension at Riverside Middle School officials for violating much the same dress policy that prohibits "non natural splendor color."

It was and in Colorado’s Greeley Evans Weld County School District 6 in September that 8 year old Konnor Vanatta was told to eliminate a Peyton Manning jersey that he had worn to college. Manning’s number, 18, is about the district’s set of banned numbers for gang affiliations.

Holding HandsA bill passed in Tennessee captured declared hand holding a ‘gateway [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] intercourse,’ with teachers facing firing for demonstrating the action.

HuggingSurprisingly, the ban on hugging is not a [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] one-time rule with a select school, but a trend that seems to be spreading. Schools in Portland and Florida started instituting these rules in 2024, while administrations in On the internet services, Brooklyn and Nz took it upon themselves this year. For those, the reasoning seems to be precisely the same: Respecting personal space and "unsuitable interactions" between students.

DodgeballDue to its "aggressive" nature, dodgeball has been suspended in schools across The united states, as it’s frequently named the cause of injuries and fights. Adult dodgeball, alternatively, may be obtaining a continued popularity.

Non Motorized TransportationYou’d think, with all the current speak about obesity nowadays, schools can be encouraging students to ride their bikes or skateboards university. One New York claimed it was illegal for youngsters to have bikes, while another Orthodox school disagreed together with the freedom afford by the two wheels.

BookbagsThere’s plenty of debate in regards to the best possible bookbag for children only one school in Michigan doesn’t allow bags in to the classroom in any way. Citing safety concerns in lunchrooms and classes, our prime school asked students to hold time for their lockers between classes to retrieve the proper books.

PogsThere have already been many toy bans in schools, but Pogs those tradeable ****l disks developed a huge splash when their safety, as well as the competitive rush spurred by their very existence, was called into question by schools around the globe.

Bake SalesThough later overturned, a Massachusetts school experimented with ban bake sales judging by their lack of nutrition.

Black MakeupIn Ohio recording, a 13 yr old boy was sent home from practice as a consequence of his black lipstick, make up and nail polish (boy just isn’t shown here). The college claimed it a rule against "extreme or distracting" makeup.

Yoga PantsAn Ottawa school banned yoga pants this past year unless the tight bottoms were under control with long shirts.

Silly BandzSilly Bandz are great! Silly Bandz are cute! Silly Bandz are, apparently, a distraction in the classroom and cannot be permitted. Schools across America have banned these collectables from class, but that sure doesn’t keep these things from getting trading at recess. schools, teachers are preventing children from making "best friends" so as to save others’ feelings.

MilkMilk was always seen as section of a normal school lunch, these days a group of doctors wants it off the menu entirely.

Ugg BootsIt can get chilly in Pennsylvania, but students there won’t be in a position to wear their sheepskin Uggs into class, because of the risk of storing contraband like [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] cell phones inside the roomy footwear.

Baggy PantsYou might have thought baggy pants were much more of a ’90s thing, but schools today are continuing to push for bans for the sagging pants, by incorporating schools claiming it inhibits learning, among others saying the style is related to gangs.

Skinny JeansAnd as there are the contrary end of the spectrum. Comparable to yoga pants, skinny jeans [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] happen to be banned in schools all over the place, this can deficiency of modesty and distraction factor for the opposite ***.

WinningIt’s physical and emotional injury teachers are trying to avoid by banning competitive games in schools and also at recess, goes the claim.

BallsA Toronto school made headlines a year ago if it was announced it might ban hard balls from its premises, after a parent suffering a concussion after being hit by way of a ball.

Jolie Talks Tomb Raider 2

She just has a stipulation or two. "We will need a unique ****** to match the first Tomb Raider movie if we can make it a hundred times better, if we can do a whole bunch of new things, think of a whole new sequence, then we will do it," Jolie told the press at London’s Heathrow airport on Sunday, according to the Scottish Daily Record.

Since Tomb Raider’s ******, [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] co written by director Simon West, was roundly trashed by critics, Jolie certainly has a point.

Angelina was speaking at Heathrow Airport on her way to Pakistan to visit refugee camps before being made a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, according to the Daily Record. Random thoughts on Day 7 of the World Cup

Random thoughts from Day 7 of the World Cup:

Watch out for Argentina. The final scoreline might have been a bit flattering, [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] but La Albiceleste looked great in dispatching a hard working South Korean side in the first match of the day. Lionel Messi was all over the place and should have scored a hat trick on his own. Instead, he helped create one for teammate Gonazlo Higua If Messi ever finds his shooting boots, Argentina could be frightening especially if Carlos T and Javier Mascherano maintain their solid form.

Worried about an injury to the strikeforce? Don be. The Argentines have Inter Diego Milito on the bench. That the same Diego Milito who scored two brilliant goals in Inter Champions League final win over Bayern Munich last month. Now, if the defense could just get rid of Demichelis

Ditto for Mexico, and I actually rooting for them. I pretty sure their goalkeeper moonlights as a luchador, but the rest of them are simply jugadores. Dos Santos is a stud. Same for Vela, though he can seem to finish. El Tri play positively and create plenty of opportunities for spectacular goals. The defense might still be a bit suspect, even if they did hold France scoreless who can do that? but they worry about that later.

Funny thing is, I actually pulling for them. It difficult to root for any team that still features Cuauht Blanco and few American fans have forgotten Rafael Marquez head butt on Cobi Jones in the 2024 World Cup but it also hard to ignore the way the Mexicans have been playing so far. and Mexico aren playing each other, I pulling for El Tri.

France deserved what they got: Do you believe in karma? As far as this tournament is concerned, maybe you should. Through two matches, Les Bleus have gathered one point, scored no goals, and given themselves basically no chance to advance. With all the talent on the team, that absolutely ridiculous. But it also satisfying to most neutral fans considering the way Thierry Henry and company qualified for the World Cup.

And ever since then, it nothing but drama: In fighting, jealousy, the absence of teamwork, you name it. If you not French, it hard to root for this team. And if you French, it probably still hard to [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] root for [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] this team.

Against Mexico, Les Bleus created next to nothing. Even when they were down only 1 [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] 0, it might as well have been 10 0. There was just no coming back. Without the steadying presence of Zinedine Zidane, the French look a lot like they did in 2024, when they exited in the first round without scoring a goal. A repeat performance wouldn be much of a shock.

Greece got lucky: Sani Kaita red card was as stupid as it was soft. Yes, he’s an idiot, but let’s keep things in perspective. What started as a minor scuffle blew up into a sending off thanks to Vasilis Torosidis transformation into an Academy Award winning actor. [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] After being grazed by Kaita studs, the Greek defender adopted The Soccer Face (imagine the face on the cover of the film version of Pink Floyd Wall. Here a picture of Didier Drogba doing it) and fell theatrically into the advertisement boards. Without the acting, the referee never would have seen it, mostly because it was much ado about nothing. Footballers weren always this

After the red card, Greece took full advantage of its numerical superiority, scored [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] its first ever World Cup goal and won its first ever World Cup game. But the winning goal came after another goalkeeping error, this time from Nigeria usually solid Vincent Enyeama. Now, if they beat South Korea, they through to the second round. Only time will tell if luck is on their side again.

Scoring is indeed up: Throughout the first round of games, most teams played boring, overly defensive football. One can reasonably assume this was because they subscribed to the notion that you can lose your first match and expect to advance to the second round. Indeed, now that the first round of matches is over, the goals seem to have returned. Thursday slate of three games featured 10 goals an average of 3.3 per contest. All I can say is, darlin

‘Our Children Are Not Our Private Property’ VIDEO

Melissa Harris Perry dove headfirst on Saturday to the weeklong controversy about her MSNBC promo.

Harris Perry took over as target of relentless conservative attacks to the ad, in which she said society needed to think in a collective manner about its children and that "we have to break through our form of private idea that [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] kids belong to their parents or kids are part [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] of their families, and observe [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] that kids belong to their communities." On his MSNBC show, Chris Hayes estimated that this 30 second promo had, when you added it up, been covered for more than an [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] hour on Fox News throughout the week even though it was aired for only a total of four minutes on MSNBC.

"I believe our youngsters are not our private property," she said. "They are not just extensions of ourselves."

Then, Harris Perry explained why she thought she had caused such a ruckus. She said the battle over the ad was, [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] at its core, exactly the same argument the left along with the right have been having for centuries.

"This isn’t about me wanting to take your kids," she said. "This is approximately whether we like a society, expressing our collective will through our public institutions, including our government, use a right to impinge on individual freedoms as a way to advance a common good. That is certainly exactly the fight we have been having a couple of hundred years."

I feel like i do so many wrong things or mistakes and just not want to live anymore

I agree with starman, but I am going to elaborate, so I am doing an answer, not a comment.

Sometimes, you just have to do whatever you have to do to survive. Life is tough, and sometimes, its just too much, but I can assure you of one truth, life is like a ship. Waves hit it, and rock it, but eventually it levels out. Its not always rough waters, and those times where its smooth, make it all worth it.

Personally, I believe that medication of some kind, whether is antidepressants, or "other" drugs, can get you through the bad times. I am not advocating drug use, but if it works.

Mainly, get some counselling. Call a hotline or a friend if it gets to be too much, and talk to your doctor about it. For me, there was about 2 years, that without some meds, I wouldnt be here now. They really help. You are never the only one feeling like this.

But always remember that drugs (anti depressents or any other kind) only give a temporary relief to the problem and NOT a solution in itself. The point of taking any drugs (pre******ion or otherwise) is just to get you through the time until you can get the REAL help that is required.

All too often nowadays, doctors are all too keen to simply stick the patient on anti depressents, pain killers, or whatever they can prescribe, and leave it at that rather than go through the effort and expense of getting the real help thatis needed to fix the problem itself, rather than just treat the symptoms temporarily and get the patient out of their office as quick as possible so they can see another patient.

Excellent advice. focusing on our failures just clouds our perception of our successes. Preferably a Pentecostal church. God can meet our needs in ways that no human will ever come close to. People fail, but God and His Love NEVER fails. And as previously commented, this too shall pass. Tough it out, but get outside of yourself and make someone elses day brighter, it will make you feel great in the process!

Sorry clairemeister, I really don mean to be rude, and I am sure that your faith works for you, but faith doesn always work for everyone. All too often I see on these suicide threads that people are using them to try and recruit new members. Please do [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] not, be too offended, as I mean no disrespect to you or your faith. I am sure you are doing what you feel is the best in your opinion and from your experience. I will fight to the end for your right to worship whoever you want, however you want, but I will also fight for the right of others not to have someone else faith thrust upon them (however well meaning, which I am sure is the case with you).

Speaking as someone who has been actively suicidal for over 15 years, the last thing I wanted to hear when I was asking for help or advice was someone trying to use my feeling weak as a chance to [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] recruit me to their faith, their politics or any other group that they represent. I wanted to be treated as an individual and listened to.

Lots of people go through this, i used to, the world was out to get me but one day i woke up, looked out the window and said "Forget this" so i threw away any bad memories and bought a box of crayons and colored happy pictures and hung them all over my walls. i surrounded myself with only happy thoughts and even though this method didnt work forever, it wotked just long enough for a truly extraordinary person to come in my life and save me for good. i cant beleive i almost killed myself back in the day but i sure as hell am glad i didnt.

Learn from your mistakes and don repeat them. It called growth. We all live and learn. Sometimes, unfortunately, we all go through periods where we do things that either embarrass us so much or make us feel so stupid that we think we can or don want to make it through another day. Realize that you live through all of it (even if you feel like you don want to!) and it will pass. It may feel hard to believe at the moment, but better days will come. Everyone is different so try all kinds of things that might make you feel better. For example, do something you think you are either pretty good at or know you are good at often and realize that not everything you do is wrong or a mistake. If you give yourself positive reinforcement by taking a mental note every time you do something good or right instead of concentrating on your errors , you realize that you have more good than bad. Also, do whatever makes you feel better. For me, music has been a great escape for me. I remember a time when I was feeling like you and a song from REM called Every**** Hurts, was a Godsend for me. Every time I heard it, it just made me feel less alone in the world. And keep your chin up!

I have been actively suicidal for over 15 years. I feel that I have made SO many mistakes that I couldn possibly list them all here or I would completely fill the entire network up. But here are just a few of the highlights (or lowlights, if you prefer).

I allowed my son to go live with his mother and her new boyfriend, who threw him down the stairs and he died from a brain haemorrhage. Every day I feel guilty for allowing him to go live there. My daughter went to live abroad with her mother at that point, because I was not coping very well, and I have not seen her since either and don have any idea what her name is anymore, let alone what country to even start to look for her (so I lost both my children that day).

While grieving for my son death, I treated my then girlfriend like crap. I hadn previously told her that I had children, so I couldn tell her why I was so upset. It ended up that she killed herself because of my behaviour thinking that it was she that was making me so miserable. Every day I regret not telling her the truth and from that day forward I swore never to tell another lie in my life (which is really not as easy as it sounds and has lost me a LOT of friends along the way by not being able to lie to them).

Later in life, I caught my then girlfriend in bed with someone else, lost my temper, got on my motorbike and rode it, at night, in the rain at 90mph, stright into a brick wall, shattering almost every bone in my ****, puncturing a lung and a kidney and leaving me in constant pain, covered from head to toe in scars and permanently in a wheelchair for the rest of my life (although my legs and abdomen are worth a small fortune, as they have most of a limited edition Goldwing motorbike still in them).

Although I was heavily abused by my family while growing up, I decided that when my mother asked me to look after her house while she was going to live abroad, it would be a great chance for us all to mend our brodges and maybe get close at long last. One night, she turned up in the middle of the night with my brother, tortured me physically and mentally for 2 weeks straight, and left me in a wood around midnight with my arms and wrists slashed open to bleed to death. I was found by a guy walking his dog and taken to hospital and they saved me, although I had lost 5 pints of blood and it was a [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] close thing.

Practically every day I mess up somehow and make mistakes on a ratio of about 300 mistakes to every 1 non mistake in my life. I went from being a multi millionaire with 2 sucessful businesses to being broke and living rough on the streets.

HOWEVER, from my experiences, I started a charity to help the homeless and people in poverty in the UK.

Although it such a small thing, I am proud that everything I own today I managed to buy, myself, while living on minimum benefits. I owe no debts to anyone and I still manage to help someone every now and then (when my pain isn too bad, I not too stoned from my medication and my mind is working for once).

The point I am making is that I am fairly sure that even those few mistakes I listed there (and they are just a few, I promise you that I have literally thousands of other examples but don want to send you to sleep if you aren already by boring you with them) are probably worse than any mistake you felt you may have made (not that I trying to compete, I am merely trying to show you that I have felt how you feel right now), and even if they aren then at least you aren alone in making bad mistakes.

However, EVERY SINGLE ONE of those mistakes, and the thousands of others not listed, have made me into who I am today. I honestly would not be me now without making all those mistakes, and you wouldn [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] be you now, reading this and getting bored to tears, without you making all of your mistakes. BECAUSE of ALL the mistakes thatI have made in my life, I am able to help a few people now and then overcome their problems [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] in their lives and help to get them up and going again to rebuild their lives again, just as you are going to do because if you manage to commit suicide before I do I will be SERIOUSLY annoyed with you because I have been trying for longer, so it MY right to go first! ok? (besides, I a male and that means that we always like to feel that we are MUCH more hard done by than ANYONE ELSE!).

If you really want to find something to make you feel better, then my advice is to go out at 3am, find someone that has REALLY annoyed you in the past, and blast a trumpet through their letterbox or something like that. It amazing how doing something as childish as simply getting your own back on someone in a really petty way can make you feel good (well, at least until the cips turn up, then you have to run away REALLY fast and blame the cat or something!). Another way is to eat a load of mexican food, or beans, then purposely hold in all the wind until you get into a lift with a load of pompous people who think they are better than everyone else, then let it all rip! That one always makes ME feel better (if only for the relief of finally getting rid of all that wind that I been holding in all the time I was trying to find a lift full of pompous people!).

I can already tell from your responses on this site that you will find a way to get through this, and like I said, if you don and you DO manage to kill yourself before I do, then you better find a great hiding place in the afterlife, cos I WILL come looking for you when I finally get it right and get there!

Some of us take the hard road through life. Slow down, consider your options before you act. Maybe a meditation class would help. Choose your friends carefully. I have a 37 year old son who has made his life so difficult. he is a pothead and a drinker, and does the most stupid things when he under the influence. He is up to his neck in debt, estranged from his family, and will be a father for the first time in August (which scares the hell out of me for the baby sake), and in 25 years he learned nothing.

JWoWW asks court to block ex

Jersey Shore star Jenni ‘JWoWW’ Farley reportedly filed court papers today (Thursday) in an effort to prevent her ex boyfriend and manager from releasing nude photos of her. The photos taken over a year ago reportedly show a nude JWoWW before and after her second boob job and a round of liposuction.

JWoWW and her legal team are trying to prevent Lippolis from making money off the photos by releasing them. Lippolis’ attorney claims the photos rightfully belong to his client. "We believe they represent no irreparable harm to her and Mr Lippolis should not be precluded from doing what he wants with them," Lippolis’ attorney, Jeffery I. Baum, is quoted as saying.

JWoWW’s attorney has previously demanded the photos be returned and eluding that their release could strain the reality star’s relationship with MTV. "It has come to [Jwoww’s] attention that you may be in possession of certain photos of her that may be derogatory to her image and in violation of her contract with MTV," a December 2024 letter to Lippolis from JWoWW’s attorney reportedly read. (Interestingly, the letter also appears to finally reveal while JWoWW decided to drop a $400,000 Playboy deal.)

The legal trouble between the former couple stems back several months beginning after their August 2024 split during the filming Jersey Shore Season 3. Just days after breaking up, JWoWW filed a police report accusing Lippolis of taking items that belonged to her from the apartment that the two shared. The exact items [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] were never specified, but the fight over the nude photos raises the question if JWoWW’s police report stemmed from her concen over the alleged nude photos.

Jersey Shore Season 3 premieres tonight January 6 on MTV at 10pm ET/PT.

On Overcoming a Debilitating Fear

It started some time in the early ’90s on a sleepy, suburban street in Maryland. I was about 3 years old, probably wearing my favorite hat a pink acid wash denim baseball cap, because again, it was the early ’90s and enjoying a lovely day when it happened: A turtle crept out [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] from the bush I was standing next to, startling me so badly that I broke into a sprint and never looked back.

I had seen this bush shake violently before, which had unnerved me quite a bit. Now I had finally seen the creature that had caused that bush to move on its own and that creature was crazy scary. When you are 3 years old and your only exposure to turtles has been a smiling green cartoon in your picture books, the wrinkly neck and beady eyes of the real thing are terrifying. You’re sure you’re seeing a monster a bush shaking, up to no good mini dragon that would certainly live under your bed and/or in your closet if given the chance. So I was distressed. From then on, whenever I passed that bush, I would run and pray that I hadn’t woken the beast again.

I’d love to be able to say that by the time I matured a bit let’s say by the time I turned 7 I stopped being scared of turtles. But no. I have carried this fear with me ever since.

About a year ago, I came to a realization that helped me justify this phobia I’ve been grappling with for more than 20 years: This episode with the turtle is my first negative memory. That turtle introduced me to fear and made me feel threatened right outside my own home. Before that day, my memories are just a blur of playing with my neighbor’s cocker spaniel, licking the spoon when my mom made brownies and tea parties with my stuffed animals.

I’ve always known that this fear (officially called "chelonaphobia") was, more or less, irrational. Whenever anyone hears about it, they A. laugh for a very long time and then B. say, "But couldn’t you walk faster than a turtle?" Yes, maybe. Probably, even. But do we not remember the tale of the tortoise and the hare? Everyone underestimated that reptile, and he showed them. Also, those things live basically forever, and they have a violent streak: Just last year, a turtle couple made headlines when, after 115 years of bliss, they "divorced" and [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] the female bit off part of the male’s *****. And finally, let’s not forget that turtles are thought to have survived whatever wiped out the dinosaurs. (Read that again: Turtles were impervious to the horrible thing that killed what are arguably the most terrifying and violent creatures to have ever roamed the Earth. That’s not even a little scary? Come on.)

A fear of turtles has been an occasional, though very serious, inconvenience. Friends (and my own parents) like sending me email attachments of turtle photos; they know I’ll jump out of my chair and start shaking while I beg whoever is sitting next to me, in a very shrill voice, [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] to please, please, please, delete that email as fast as possible. I walk a few hundred yards out of my way when cutting through [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] Central Park just to avoid the Turtle Pond. Going to zoos kind of sucks. I once went to an animal preserve and, after finding myself in a tortoise habitat there was no sign! I flew into such a panic that I jumped over a barricade to escape it. I’ve had terrible dreams about turtles flying at my face, chasing me with the intent of gumming me to death, and hiding in my bed.

It’s not a great exaggeration, then, to say that last weekend, I walked into my own worst nightmare: the New York Turtle Tortoise Society’s annual Turtle and Tortoise Show. Dreaming of a day when I could open email attachments in peace, I decided it was time to kick my ridiculous phobia and I figured an unconventional fear deserved an unconventional attempt to overcome it. A turtle and tortoise show is sort of like a dog show, but with less prancing and fewer leashes.

Oh my God, were there fewer leashes.

One of the reasons I managed to convince myself I could handle attending the show was a very specific line in the rules: "All containers must be escape proof!" I assumed that it must be a serious stipulation if it was going to be bolded and italicized.

And yet, as I walked up to the school in Greenwich Village where the show was held on Saturday, the first thing I saw was a turtle, nowhere near its escape proof container, skittering across the ground. (Don’t tell me turtles don’t skitter; I’ve seen them.) I was already on edge, but my anxiety level spiked at the sight. As I signed in at the front desk outside the entry gate, I inquired as casually as I could about how many turtles were present ("we have 67 so far!"). Meanwhile, another turtle scampered (again, I’ve seen the scampering!) right out and onto the sidewalk before its owner snatched it up. I don’t know what I had expected from a turtle show, but it certainly hadn’t been a reptilian free for all with creatures going rogue and trying to break free.

But I entered. I entered as if the ground was [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] littered with landmines and any sudden movement could lead to my demise, but I entered.

I started talking to the turtle owners an exceptionally friendly group of people, I have to say. I heard a few things that didn’t necessarily help with my nerves: one guy described feeding his red slider turtle filet mignon, while another told me that he’d seen his male tortoises bite the female’s face when trying to mate with her. He also mentioned that he’d never seen his pets drink water. Before that moment, I had thought that the need for water was the one thing all living beings had in common.

These gruesome tidbits were offset by an overwhelming amount of turtle love. People kissing turtles. People hugging turtles. People cooing at their turtles. People pulling their turtles around in a refurbished Barbie Grand Cherokee and on a scooter. I swear the turtles were eating it right up. There were scrapbooks, posters and photo albums chronicling the turtles’ lives. One owner described his pet as "the Marilyn Monroe of tortoises." An entire area was sectioned off for a turtle themed garage sale (I love a good bargain, but this was a little much for me). There was a lot of insisting that "turtles are just like dogs!" and I heard specific creatures referred to as "precious" and "beautiful" and "majestic."

And then a single syllable escaped my mouth that I never, ever could have expected: "Aww!"

I’d just seen two sleepy baby turtles cuddling, and they were pretty damn adorable.

I don’t know what it was about seeing those little guys essentially newborns, still so young and fresh to the world that their ***es couldn’t even be determined yet but the rest of the day was a lot easier for me. I got closer to the massive tortoises lumbering around. By the time I made my way around to the snapping turtles, I was more fascinated than scared, and these were the ones with pointy *****s, spiny tails, and diets of live fish. (I was, however, grateful when the owner covered the container of the matamatas before they got too "stressed out.")

Once the time came to announce the winners, I sat pretty calmly amongst all the people and their pets as white, red and blue ribbons, as well as a large best in show trophy, were doled out. I was not yet in the know enough to understand what made some turtles superior to others (there were two categories of judging criteria: ownership responsibility [عزيزي الزائر يتوجب عليك التسجيل لمشاهدة الرابط للتسجيل اضغط هنا] and quality of the animal), but I clapped for all the winners. Everyone was so happy and so proud that for a few minutes, it wasn’t too hard to forget how stressed out and anxious I’d been when I’d arrived at the event.

I haven’t necessarily eradicated my turtle fear. I don’t plan to take advantage of the society’s free adoption program, but I am inclined to think that turtles are more awe inspiring and interesting than horrifying and evil. I think if I went back to that house in Maryland, I could face off against my old adversary. I’m sure he’s still there. He’s probably going to outlive us all.

I realize that turtles and tortoises are two different things. Generally, from here on out, I’m going to use "turtle" to cover all my bases. To clarify, my phobia applies to both.
