The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge represented Queen Elizabeth in Belgium at a ceremony at the Allies’ Memorial at Cointe, overlooking the Belgian city of Liege, the first of several events commemorating the outbreak of the First World War.
The Flanders poppy or red poppy became a symbol of Remembrance after growing from the battlefields following the conflict.
