HOUSTON (AP) – Experts tracking a Great White Shark through the Gulf of Mexico have received electronic signals indicating the route could lead to Texas.
Data from the group Ocearch shows another "ping" was recorded Tuesday morning from the Shark dubbed Katharine.
The 14-foot Shark was tagged last August off Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The tag sends a signal when the 2,300-pound Shark comes to the surface. Officials did not immediate provide an estimated ******** Tuesday for Katharine.
The Houston Chronicle reports a satellite on Sunday put Katharine about 140 miles west of Sarasota, Florida. Researchers say in another week the westbound animal could be past the Mississippi River and eventually reach Texas.
Robert Hueter with the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota says tags can last up to five years.

Working women can’t be great moms: Emma Thompson

Nanny McPhee said what? Millionaire actress Emma Thompson declared Sunday that women who work can’t be great mothers.

The 55-year-old British actress — who starred as the wart-nosed titular character in 2024’s “Nanny McPhee” — took a yearlong break from her movie career to spend time with her 14-year-old daughter, Gaia Wise, and recommends other mothers do the same for their kids.

“You can’t be a great mum and keep Working all the time. I wanted to spend more time with my family. A year off was my birthday present to myself. I didn’t actually act or write. I was just a mum,” she told the Daily Mail on Sunday.

“I highly recommend others to do the same, if they can afford it.”

The “Remains of the Day” star — whose net worth is roughly $50 million — said that, during her break, she “taught drama at my daughter’s school, *****d meals and had fun.”

Her parental advice irked Working moms, who called it old-fashioned and tone-deaf.

“I don’t agree with her at all. You can work full time and be an incredible mom — and give your kids the feeling that you’re present and that they are loved,” said Laura Deutsch, a mom of two and co-founder of Mommybites, a *** site for moms.

“It doesn’t matter if you work, as long as you show your child that you’re engaged when you are home,” said Deutsch, 41, of Summit, NJ, who has an 8-year-old and a 6-year-old.

“For me, Working full time made me a happier person. And being a happier person made me a better mom.”

Plus, she adds, most moms can’t afford a yearlong break.

“[Thompson] has a lot of money, and that skews her perspective. It’s just so different, The majority of moms don’t have that choice,” Deutsch said.

With her remarks, Thompson is following in the footsteps of another film star — Gwyneth Paltrow, who incurred moms’ wrath by claiming women Working 9-to-5 jobs have it easier than she does as an actress.

“When you’re shooting a movie, they’re like, ‘We need you to go to Wisconsin for two weeks,’ and then you work 14 hours a day, and that part of it is very difficult,” Paltrow told E! News in March.

“I think to have a regular job and be a mom is not as — of course, there are challenges — but it’s not like being on set.”

Thompson — who, in addition to Gaia, has an adopted 26-year-old son with actor Greg Wise — also lamented the difficulty of balancing motherhood with a film career on Sunday.

“Sometimes in life, you’ll have some things, at other times, you will have other things . . . You don’t need it all at once, it’s not good for you,” she said. “Motherhood is a full-time job.”

Specialist aircraft will leave Cairns early Saturday on an urgent mission to determine the extent of an oil spill near the Great Barrier Reef.

The slick was discovered in waters off Townsville by a fisherman Friday morning and confirmed Friday evening by the state government.

Pollution clean-up teams have now been placed on *****.

A Townsville fisherman told the Townsville Coast Guard on Friday morning that he had seen an oil spill between 800 metres to 1000 metres long about 18 nautical miles NNE of Cape Upstart.

Cape Upstart is a national park in the Whitsunday between Ayr and Bowen, with important aboriginal middens and recognized as an important ceremonial site by the Juru indigenous people.

The oil spill – in waters between the coast and the Reef – was confirmed by Townsville Water police and Maritime Safety Queensland staff about 6.40pm on Friday.

"We can confirm some patches of oily water have been sighted in the water south of Townsville," a Maritime Safety Queensland spokeswoman said.

"An Australian Maritime Safety Authority specialised aircraft out of Cairns is being tasked for an early morning inspection tomorrow of the ocean area and also of the islands and coastline in the general areas," she said.

Oil pollution teams and oil mopping resources in Townsville have now been placed on *****.

A detailed recovery plan will be finalised depending on the outcome of the Saturday morning flyover of the oil spill area.

Cape Upstart has granite headland covered in a range of vegetation types from vine thicket to heath. Significant areas of beach scrub and coastal dunes are also protected in the park.

© Phil Walter/Fairfax Media The Queensland government has confirmed an oil spill off the Great Barrier Reef near Townsville.

Earlier Ted Winterbottom, from Townsville’s Coast Guard, confirmed a fisherman reported an oil spill to them early Friday morning.

"I heard the report and I put it over the radio this morning," Mr Winterbottom said.

"From what I understand it is about 10 nautical miles off Cape Upstart and it is about 800 metres in diameter," he said.

The hull of the fisherman’s boat had oily residue, Maritime Safety inspectors confirmed on Friday.

Mr Winterbottom said Townsville Water Police left on Friday afternoon to investigate the sighting.

He said he did not know if the fisherman was a local.

"It was reported to me by our duty officer, when I took over this morning at 7am."

"And that is all he knew; that it was an oil slick and it was about 800 metres in diameter. I can’t tell you any more."

Queensland Transport on Friday arranged for a second aerial helicopter flight on Friday and asked a Queensland Water Police vessel from Townsville to complete an on-site inspection.

Queensland’s worst oil disaster was in March 2024, when the MV Adventurer lost 100,000 litres of fuel oil along 60 kilometres of Moreton Bay in rough seas.

That spill took over 1,425 people 16 months to clean up at a total cost of A$4 million. That included $A2 million of public funds.

The MV Adventurer also left a 500-metre oil spill in the Brisbane River – which was contained – when it docked.

Just great, my kid’s apology note to her teacher for swearing

So my oldest got into an argument with a boy at school over the term, "Oh Shit." She was trying to tell him it’s a bad word. However, she managed to say it 15 times while arguing her point. Eventually she got into trouble and came home with this "Refocus" sheet which asks her ways that she could improve her behavior. I doubt this is what her teacher was expecting…

***************

Chaz rushed out of school and got on the bus.
Immediately, he pulled out his phone and started
tweeting.
“Birthday: so far so brilliant. On way home for
dinner. And presents? Recording equipment?
Or even ukulele? Sick!”
Five minutes later, he’d already had 46 favourites
and 104 retweets. He’d even got 22 new
followers today. Ten on Twitter, and 12 on You-
Tube. Life was sweet.
Once he was home, he was planning to go
straight to his room to make a new vlog. But his
mum called him over. His parents were sitting
at the table with a chocolate cake covered with
candles. God, he loved birthdays. He couldn’t
see any gifts. But that was fine. Probably his
present was recording equipment, and it was
upstairs. That’s why they stopped him. Sick!
He wished his sister could be there, but she’d
left years ago. Actually, he thought, it wasn’t
long after her 16th birthday. Maybe she didn’t
get what she wanted. The parents were a bit
past it — always talking about books written
by old farts. Whatever. Now he communicated
with his sister through Twitter. She was in Edinburgh
studying to become a forensic pathologist.
“Hey, Mum, Dad,” said Chaz.
“Happy birthday, Charles,” said his mum.
“You’re 16 now,” said his dad. “We’d like to have
a talk.”
“Yeah, sure. Can we have the cake while we’re
talking?” said Chaz.
“In a minute,” said his dad. “We’d like to talk to
you about your future, Charles.”
“In the future, you know, I’d rather you called
me Chaz.”
“That’s sort of what we want to talk about,” said
his mum.
“You see,” his father started. “It’s like this, son.
You’re not really our son. Not our biological
son, anyway.”
“What? I’m adopted?” gasped Chaz.
“Your mother gave birth to you,” said his dad.
“She incubated you, so to speak. But your genetic
material is completely different.”
“So, what are you saying?”
“Charles… You really are Charles. About 17
years ago, we acquired something very valuable
in an auction. It had belonged to a famous
author called Charles Dickens. We acquired
Charles Dickens’s toothpick.”
This was a bit of an anticlimax. What next? William
Shakespeare’s nail scissors?
“But we had this incredible idea,” his father
continued. “Charles Dickens was one of the
greatest literary geniuses of all time. What a
thing to give to the world: to bring back Charles
Dickens. To let him continue his work and bring
great literature into the world.”
This conversation was not going in a good way,
Charles thought.
“So we had the toothpick analyzed for genetic
material,” his father said. “And then we managed
to revive it and grow it. And clone it.”
There was a silence. Chaz was first to speak.
“No,” he said.
“That’s right, Son. You are Charles Dickens.”
“But I’m not Charles Dickens,” Chaz protested.
“I don’t even like his bloody books.”
“Oh, Charles, that’s not true,” said his mum.
“You liked A Christmas Carol.”
“That was the Muppets!” Chaz shouted.
“Nevertheless, Charles Dickens — you — wrote
it.”
“I did not! I hate writing.”
“You write all the time,” said his mum.
“I tweet all the time,” said Chaz, “on Twitter. Not
the same as writing effing, boring novels.”
“Charles…” started his father.
“I’m Chaz, damn it. C-H-A-Z. And you’ve just
stolen my life from me. I had a life, and now you
say it’s some**** else’s.”
“No, we’ve given you a life…”
“No, stolen. I never wanted all those books you
keep throwing at me. I hate books. What happened
to the ukulele I asked for?”
“That’s not a serious instrument, Charles.
Books are works of art,” said his father.
“They’re past it,” Chaz screamed. “Just like you.
I tweet. I have 12,000 followers. And I do vlogs
on YouTube. I’ve got followers there, too, and I
keep getting more. I might even…”
Chaz was about to say, “might even get a book
deal”, but that would have been counterproductive.
“So I’m supposed to sit down and write these
stupid, boring novels because — wait for it —
because ‘I’m a gift to humanity’?”
“You make it sound like it’s a bad thing,” said
his dad.
“OMG, I’ve had enough of this shit,” screamed
Chaz, and ran out of the house. He pulled out
his phone and walked down the street while he
typed.
“omg u can’t believe what psycho tossers mum
and dad are. U were so right to escape,” he
wrote to his sister Jane on Twitter.
The user imnotjane responded within seconds.
“O I can. It is a truth universally acknowledged
that our parents are toerags.”
“U won’t believe what they told me.”
“Try me,” tweeted imnotjane. “But maybe not
on Twitter.”
