Liam Neeson opens up about his grief after wife Natasha Richardson’s death

Liam Neeson has spoken of his ongoing grief following the tragic death of his wife, actress Natasha Richardson, five years ago in a freak skiing accident.

The actor told CBS’s Anderson Cooper that her death at the age of 45 still doesn’t seem real in a poignant interview that will air Sunday on 60 Minutes.

Neeson, 61, told Cooper how he arrived at a Canadian hospital to be told by doctors that Richardson was brain dead after her accident.

‘She was on life support… I went in to her and I told her I loved her, said "Sweetie, you’re not coming back from this, you’ve banged your head"’ he said.

‘She and I had made a pact, if any of us got into a vegetative state that we’d pull the plug. That was my immediate thought,"Okay, these tubes have to go. She’s gone."’

The Irish actor married Richardson in 1994 and the couple had two sons.

He said that even today, he expects Richardson to come walking through the door.

‘[Her death] was never real,’ he told Cooper.

‘It still kind of isn’t. There’s periods now in our New York residence when I hear the door opening, especially the first couple of years… anytime I hear that door opening, I still think I’m going to hear her.’

Neeson told Cooper his grief is less immediate but still a part of his life.

‘It hits you. It’s like a wave. You just get this profound feeling of instability… the Earth isn’t stable anymore and then it passes and it becomes more infrequent, but I still get it sometimes.’

Following Richardson’s accident, Neeson kept his wife on life support for a short time so that her family and friends could say goodbye.

Now, he says, Richardson is living on in three other people.

‘Donated three of her organs, so she’s keeping three people alive at the moment. Her heart, her kidneys and her liver. It’s terrific and I think she would be very thrilled and pleased by that,’ he said.

Cooper interviewed Neeson in the lead-up to the release of his latest film, Non Stop, which premieres next week.

The actor said he’s bemused to still be playing the action hero at his age.

‘I’m 61 years of age, man, you know? Going around, fighting these guys, yeah, I feel a wee bit embarrassed, you know?

As a mother, American model Cindy Crawford says she can’t imagine how her own mother felt hearing her three-year-old son say he’s going to die.

In an episode of Oprah’s Master Class, Crawford, 49, opened up about the loss of her brother Jeff to cancer when she ten.

"My mother said she found him [Jeff] sitting in his room. He was sitting at his little table, and she said, ‘What are you doing?’ And he said, ‘I’m praying.’ And she said, ‘What are you praying about?’

He said, ‘So that when I die, you’ll be OK,’" says Crawford in the video.

"As a mum I can’t imagine hearing your child say that."

When Crawford was eight, her little brother was diagnosed with Leukemia; he was two.

"I think when my parents first told us that my brother was sick, we didn’t really understand what it meant … They didn’t use the word ‘cancer,’" she said.

Crawford says that Jeff was going to the hospital every day for radiation, but that the prognosis wasn’t good.

"He was in remission at times, it was like that hope that he’s cured, he’s better.

"Then the remission ends and they get sick again and all of a sudden it’s more doctors, more hospitals and you know my mother, more distracted and sad and stressed out."

Crawford says at the time she had no experience of death at ten, but she is sure her brother understood.

"Right before he died he had told all of his doctors, ‘I’m not coming back.’"

It was Christmas and Jeff was due to see his doctors on January 3.

"The day that he was supposed to go back to the hospital, that is when he died," says Crawford.

"There’s some sense of completeness and peace that comes with knowing that he knew that, and he kind of had decided he was done fighting," Crawford says.

Crawford has two children, Kaia Jordan Gerber, 13, and Presley Walker Gerber, 16, with Rande Gerber.

Following in her mother’s footsteps, Kaia recently made her modelling debut in Vogue Italia.

Robert De Niro Opens Up About His Gay Father
By Jeremy Blacklow

Robert De Niro (Platon/OUT Magazine)
From Taxi Driver and The Godfather, to Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, Robert De Niro is one of the most accomplished working actors alive today.

Never short on extracurricular activities (he and producing partner Jane Rosenthal just wrapped their 13th Tribeca Film Festival last month), De Niro’s latest project is a touching ********ary About his father, Robert De Niro Sr. — a New York artist who was revered by his son, but struggled his whole life with being gay.

Although his Father died 20 years ago from cancer, De Niro has been committed to preserving his legacy. The doc called Remembering the Artist: Robert De Niro, Sr. premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is set to air June 9 on HBO.

The 70-year-old actor recently opened up to Out About the relationship he had with his dad while giving the magazine a personalized tour of his father’s final home and art studio in Soho, which he maintains as if a working artist still lives there. "It was the only way to keep his being, his existence alive here," he explained.

When it comes to his father’s sexuality, De Niro said it was something that his Father was very conflicted About his whole life. "Yeah, he probably was [conflicted]," he told Out. "Being from that generation, especially from a small town upstate. I was not aware, much, of it," adding that his family’s bottled up emotions were a product of the times. "I wish we had spoken About it much more. My mother didn’t want to talk About things in general, and you’re not interested when you’re a certain age."

Growing up, he and his Father were distant. "We were not the type of Father and son who played ****ball together, as you can surmise," he continued. "But we had a connection. I wasn’t with him a lot, because my mother and he were separated and divorced. As I say in the ********ary, I looked after him in certain ways."

Still, he learned from his father’s struggles. "Again, for my kids, I want them to stop and take a moment and realize that you sometimes have to do things now instead of later, because later may be 20 years from now — and that’s too late."

When asked whether or not his dad’s sexuality influenced the roles he had played over the years, De Niro said, "No, [because] they weren’t offered to me. If they had been offered to me by a good director, that’s something I would have considered."

The ********ary, however, is one that he says he felt obligated to produce. "It was my responsibility to make a ********ary About him," he said. "I was always planning on doing it, but never did. Then Jane Rosenthal, my partner at Tribeca [Enterprises], said, ‘We should start doing that now.’ It was not intended to be on HBO. It was just something I wanted to do."

Remembering the Artist: Robert De Niro, Sr. premieres June 9 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO. Watch the trailer below:
