Lena Dunham denies child abuse claims stemming from new autobiography

Kevin D. Williamson, a columnist for the conservative-leaning magazine National Review, accused Lena Dunham this weekend of admitting to sexual abuse in her new memoir Not That Kind of Girl.

Williamson points to a passage in the memoir where Dunham details how she sexually experimented with her little sister, Grace. Williamson also calls Dunham’s parents child abusers.

Dunham writes of casually masturbating while in bed next to her younger sister, of bribing her with “three pieces of candy if I could kiss her on the lips for five seconds … anything a sexual predator might do to woo a small suburban girl I was trying.” At one point, when her sister is a toddler, Lena Dunham pries open her vagina — “my curiosity got the best of me,” she offers, as though that were an explanation.

Truth Revolt, a blog run by Conservative political commentator Ben Shapiro, published “Lena Dunham Describes Sexually Abusing Her Little Sister,” a follow-up to the National Review’s piece. The author, Bradford Thomas, writes:

In one particularly unsettling passage, Dunham experimented with her six-year younger sister’s vagina. “This was within the spectrum of things I did,” she writes.
In the collection of nonfiction personal accounts, Dunham describes using her little sister at times essentially as a sexual outlet, bribing her to kiss her for prolonged periods and even masturbating while she is in the bed beside her.

Wes Cage: ‘I Was Digging My Grave’ with Substance Abuse

Wes Cage: ‘I Was Digging My Grave’ with Substance Abuse

Since welcoming son Lucian Augustus with wife Danielle last year, Wes Cagehas been soaking up every moment with his new family.
It’s a stark contrast from the dramatic headlines that used to follow Nicolas Cage‘s elder son — a bloody fight with his former trainer, a messy split from exNikki Williams — and one that he welcomes wholeheartedly after a tough battle with Substance abuse.

“It got to the point where people thought I was Digging my grave,” he tells PEOPLE exclusively about his journey to sobriety. “Lucian’s saved both of our lives, and we are very blessed to have him. It’s just a very joyous time right now.”

Drinking multiple cases of beer, a box of wine, hard liquor and taking pills throughout a single day at his lowest point, Cage, 24, quit alcohol cold turkey after landing in the hospital in 2024 after suffering from a severe withdrawal.

At the time, his first marriage to Williams was ending, and Cage met Danielle, also 24, shortly after through mutual friends.
“When I met him, he was on his way to getting sober,” Danielle tells PEOPLE. “I could see he was trying so hard to make [his marriage] work even though he wasn’t being appreciated.
My first bit of advice to him is you need someone who loves you as much as you love them.”

The new parents — who tied the knot in England in 2024 — now live a low-key life with Lucian, 7 months, in Los Angeles.
“Spending time with both of them is peaceful,” says Danielle. “We can be doing anything, and as long as we’re doing it together, it’s perfect.”
Adds Cage: “I want him to know what real guitar playing is, so I play Spanish music for him. We just spend skin-to-skin contact time and listen to flamenco music … he loves it.”

Cage, who is estranged from his mother Christina Fulton, also keeps in close contact with dad Nicolas, 51.
“Weston is what I call the total artist,” the actor tells PEOPLE. “He can do things I dream about doing … compose music, sing, act, sculpt and **** and now he is a loving father. To see my son with my grandson is as close to a sense of blissful completion I ever had.”

For Cage, the easiest part of staying sober has been wanting to be the best for his family. “Having the combination of Danielle and Lucian and my father in my life, just that trinity right there, basically is going to keep me here,” he says.

Gov. Rick Perry of Texas Is Indicted on Charge of Abuse of Power

By MANNY FERNANDEZAUG. 15, 2024

AUSTIN, Tex. — A grand jury indicted Gov. Rick Perry on two felony counts on Friday, charging that he abused his power last year when he attempted to pressure the district attorney here, a Democrat, to step down by threatening to cut off state financing to her office.

The indictment left Mr. Perry, a Republican, the first Texas governor in nearly 100 years to face criminal charges and presented a major roadblock to his presidential ambitions at the very time that he had been showing signs of making a comeback.
Grand jurors in Travis County charged Mr. Perry with abusing his official capacity and coercing a public servant, according to Michael McCrum, the special prosecutor assigned to the case.

The long-simmering case has centered on Mr. Perry’s veto Power as governor. His critics asserted that he used that Power as leverage to try to get an elected official — Rosemary Lehmberg, the district attorney in Travis County — to step down after her arrest on a drunken-driving Charge last year. Ms. Lehmberg is Austin’s top prosecutor and oversees a powerful public corruption unit that investigates state, local and federal officials; its work led to the 2024 indictment of a former Republican congressman, Tom DeLay, on charges of violating campaign finance laws.

Following Ms. Lehmberg’s arrest, Mr. Perry and his aides threatened to veto $7.5 million in state funding for the public corruption unit in her office unless she resigned. The governor followed through on his threat, vetoing the money by stating that he could not support “continued state funding for an office with statewide jurisdiction at a time when the person charged with ultimate responsibility of that unit has lost the public’s confidence.”
Mr. Perry’s detractors said that his moves crossed the line from hardball politics to criminal acts that violated state laws. His aides denied that he did anything wrong and said that he acted in accordance with the veto Power granted to every governor under the Texas Constitution. Ms. Lehmberg did not resign and remains in office.
The criminal indictment of the state’s chief executive shocked the Texas political world. Mr. Perry will be arraigned at a later date at the county criminal courthouse a few blocks from the governor’s mansion.
Mr. McCrum said it was a matter of procedure that anyone charged with a felony “will have to be booked in,” including the governor. Asked if Mr. Perry would have to have a mug shot taken and be fingerprinted, he added, “I imagine that’s included in that.”
The Charge of Abuse of official capacity carries a prison sentence of five to 99 years, and the Charge of coercion of a public servant Charge carries a two-to-10-year prison sentence.
Mr. Perry did not testify before the grand jury. Mary Anne Wiley, Mr. Perry’s general counsel, defended Mr. Perry’s actions in a statement on Friday. “We will continue to aggressively defend the governor’s lawful and constitutional action, and believe we will ultimately prevail,” she said.

Mr. Perry has announced he is not seeking re-election and will leave office in January. He is considering a second run for president and has been crisscrossing the country and traveling abroad in recent months to raise his political profile and to show he has fully recovered from his unsuccessful 2024 campaign, which for a time turned him into a national punch line. Lately he seems to have rebounded, making numerous appearances on national talk shows to discuss his plan to deploy 1,000 National Guard troops to the border to combat crime and illegal immigration and receiving high praise from conservatives on his recent trip to Iowa.
The criminal investigation involving Mr. Perry and his aides began when a nonprofit government watchdog group, Texans for Public Justice, filed a complaint last June accusing the governor of misdemeanor and felony offenses over his veto threat. A judge appointed a special prosecutor — Mr. McCrum, a San Antonio lawyer and former federal prosecutor — and the grand jury began hearing the case in April.
A number of Mr. Perry’s aides have testified in recent weeks before the grand jury, including Ken Armbrister, director of the governor’s legislative office. A previous grand jury was sworn in last year to determine whether Ms. Lehmberg should be removed for official misconduct. Its term expired, however, and it appeared to not consider the issues surrounding Mr. Perry’s threat and veto.
Austin and Travis County are Democratic-dominated regions in a Republican-dominated state. Asked to respond to those who described the investigation as a partisan witch hunt, Mr. McCrum said, “I’m not going to get into that. That didn’t go into my consideration whatsoever.”
The indictment could mar the legacy of Mr. Perry, the longest-serving governor in Texas history, as his tenure nears an end. Along with his blustery image as a tough-talking, pistol-packing Texan, Mr. Perry has made it a point in his nearly 14 years as governor to tout his ethics and Christianity.
Mr. Perry hired a prominent defense lawyer, David Botsford, to represent him. According to the state comptroller’s ***site, the governor’s office has paid Mr. Botsford nearly $80,000 since June. Legal experts said that other state officials who have been accused of crimes relating to their duties have had to pay for their own defense, and this was one of the first times Texas taxpayers were paying the bill.
One Saturday night in April 2024, Ms. Lehmberg was found by sheriff’s deputies with an open bottle of vodka in the front passenger seat of her car in a church parking lot in Austin and was arrested on a drunken-driving charge. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 45 days in jail.
She plays a powerful role in Austin in overseeing the Public Integrity Unit. At the time of Mr. Perry’s veto last year, prosecutors in the unit had been investigating a state agency called the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas. The agency — one of Mr. Perry’s signature initiatives — came under scrutiny by state lawmakers after accusations of mismanagement and corruption; a former official there was Indicted last year for his handling of an $11 million grant.

Mr. Perry’s critics accused him of using Ms. Lehmberg’s arrest to try to dismantle the public corruption squad, to thwart the investigation into the cancer-research agency and to seize an opportunity to take down a prominent Democrat. The public-corruption unit has been scaled down, but continues its work largely using county financing.
“The governor has a legitimate statutory role in the legislative process,” said Craig McDonald, the director and founder of Texans for Public Justice, the group that filed the original complaint. “The governor had no authority over the district attorney’s job.”
But Mr. Perry’s supporters said the accusations amounted to an attempt to criminalize politics. Republican lawmakers had attempted for years to strip the public corruption unit of state financing, accusing it of politically motivated prosecutions.
The last Texas governor to face criminal charges was James E. “Pa” Ferguson, who was Indicted in 1917 by a Travis County grand jury on embezzlement and eight other charges. His case also involved a veto that angered his critics: Mr. Ferguson vetoed the entire appropriation to the University of Texas because the university had refused to fire certain faculty members. The state Senate voted to impeach him, but he resigned first.

The photographer claims this photo was taken at Kev-Lar Kennels in Mt. Eden

This was shared nearly 900 times in only two day

TAYLORSVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — animal lovers across the country are taking to Facebook, outraged by pictures allegedly taken at a Spencer County kennel.
Photos circulating on social media show dogs chained up, appearing to lack adequate ****ter and nutrition. The person behind the photos says the images come out of Kev-Lar Kennels in Mt. Eden.
The owner of Kev-Lar Kennels, Laura Pope, did not respond to a request for comment.
In 2024, Pope was charged with 85 counts of animal cruelty. Months later, she her dogs were returned. Pope and her partner, Kevin Bailey, continue to breed dogs on the same property in Mt. Eden.
The images posted on social media sites are once again raising concern about Pope’s breeding practices.
According to a Spencer County ordinance, dogs must be given adequate ****ter from inclement weather and precipitation, including insulated bedding materials during weather extremes. The ordinance also prohibits continuous chaining of dogs.
According to County officials, Spencer County Judge Executive Bill Karrer and Officer Nolan Bryant with K-9 Rescue and Enforcement visited Pope’s property last week and re-issued her a kennel license.
WDRB cameras caught up with Bryant at Spencer County animal Control Sunday. He said the dogs on Pope’s property appeared to be well-fed, clean, and living in frequently manicured areas.
"Do I personally have an issue with all the dogs? Yes, but unfortunately the County doesn’t say she can’t have that many dogs," Bryant told reporter Courtney Godfrey as cameras were rolling.
Bryant said if they (county officials) felt Pope was in violation of County ordinances, it wouldn’t be up to him to cite her.
"The judge went out himself and looked and didn’t have a problem with it," said Bryant. "It’s up to the judge and the County attorney. If they say ‘this is what we need to fix’ then that’s what we’ll tell her to fix."
WDRB reached out to Judge Executive Karrer and did not receive a response by news time.
The non-profit organization, No Kill Louisville, said they have received a number of phone calls and emails regarding the photos.
"At minimum the conditions are not adequate," said Jeremy Ficklin.
Ficklin said, if indeed Pope is in violation of current laws–and those laws aren’t being enforced–Kentucky has a bigger problem.
"Unless that part of the problem is addressed, it’s not going to get fixed," said Ficklin. "This will get shut down because of public opinion, and in a year, the next one gets a license and we’re fighting the same battle."
Neither Pope nor Bailey have been charged.

A petition urging the closure of Kev-Lar Kennels says ice covers the ground in kennels

Records show Pope owns huskies, German shepherds, and some mixed breeds

TAYLORSVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Pictures of alleged animal abuse in Spencer County are making the rounds on the internet. But County officials are standing by their decision not to charge the owner.
The photos show dogs chained up outside in frigid temperatures, kennel floors covered in ice and water dishes frozen over.
The images have gained so much attention, an online petition to shut the breeder down has nearly 3,000 signatures in only a few days.
But the person those thousands are trying to convince — Spencer County Judge Executive Bill Karrer — says the breeder has done nothing wrong.
"I don’t see any animals up there whose lives seem to be in danger," said Karrer. "I did not see the filthiness that people were trying to portray, it just wasn’t there."
Karrer says he visited breeder Laura Pope last week, and again Monday, and believes the photos are some what disingenuous.
"Here’s this frozen dish, yeah but right next to that dish was a dish of heated water that wasn’t frozen. So that was unfair to be singled out that way."
He also said although adult dogs were kept outside, they all appeared to have access to ****ter and puppies were kept in heated kennels.
"Puppies are in igloos with heat lamps–and in some cases even have heat pads."
The petition describes dogs "in filth and soaked in urine, their own feces, and even blood from fights."
It also vividly describes the scene as you enter Pope’s property.
"Dogs upon dogs line both the left and right side of the gravel road. Big dogs chained with heavy ****l chains, poor constructed ****ters made from wooden pallets, tin roofing on some, and buckets of solid frozen water. It’s not hard to tell the dogs have been here for quite some time. Giant wear marks in the ground recount the dog’s footsteps as they have paced back and forth, back and forth. No grass beneath their feet. Only mud, snow, and ice."
But animal control says, from what they see, Pope isn’t breaking any laws.
"Myself, I think there are too many dogs," said Nolan Bryant with K-9 Rescue and Enforcement. "But there is nothing the County says that she can’t have that many dogs."
And Pope is no stranger to the law. According to court records, she was convicted on one count of animal cruelty in 2024. The conviction came after a judge allowed Pope to take an Alford plea on 95 charges of animal cruelty in the second degree.
Because of that, Bryant said he put a pending kennel license on hold once complaints started rolling in.
"Once all this came up, with the issue that happened ten years ago, we wanted to proceed with caution, make sure what we were doing was correct," said Bryant.
He has yet to cash her check for the kennel license, and said they will continue to investigate. But at this time, it is likely she will get her license renewed because County officials don’t believe she is in violation of County ordinance.
"What it boils down to for us, is not what I think or like, but what’s legal," said Karrer.
Current Spencer County ordinances do not put a limit on the number of dogs one can possess.
Although it does rule against tying dogs up for over ten hours a day, Karrer admitted that ordinance is almost impossible to enforce.
"For me to know that, I would have to monitor it for 24 hours or better. And that becomes unenforceable," said Karrer.
Karrer added that the city continues to watch the situation closely.
"It’s not a dead issue, we will continue to monitor and investigate the situation," said Karrer.
Spencer County officials aren’t the only ones "okay" with Pope’s breeding practices. Just this past September, the American kennel Club found her in compliance with organization standards.
