State Farm Inoculates Itself From Anti-Vaxxer Rob Schneider

If you’re going to trust anyone to have an authoritative scientific stance on vaccines, the guy who starred in a film as a fish tank cleaner-turned-successful-male-prostitute is definitely it. State Farm feels differently— they pulled their commercial starring comedian Rob Schneider after his anti-vaccination stance inspired mass social media outcry.

Schneider had revived his character "Richmeister" for a series of SNL-themed adsthat State Farm began running last month. Soon afterward, the company was faced with enormous Facebook and Twitter backlash over their decision to employ someone with a viewpoint so detrimental to public health.

State Farm’s director of Public Affairs, Phil Supple, told PR Week that the "ad has unintentionally been used as a platform for discussion unrelated to the products and services we provide. With that, we are working to remove the ad From our rotation at this time."

Neil Young has filed for Divorce From Pegi Young, his Wife of 36 Years and frequent musical collaborator. A petition for dissolution of marriage was filed by Young in their hometown of San Mateo, California, on July 29th. A hearing is scheduled for December 12th. A rep for Neil Young had no comment.

Pegi is the inspiration for some of Young’s most enduring love songs, including "Such a Woman," "Unknown Legend" and "Once an Angel." She began serving as his background singer in the 1990s, sharing the stage with him at the 1994 Academy Awards and numerous tours over the past 20 years. They last performed together at the Bridge School Benefit in October of 2024.

Neil first met Pegi when she was working as a waitress at a diner near his California ranch, a story he tells in the 1992 song "Unknown Legend." "I used to order just to watch her float across the floor," he sang. "She grew up in a small town/Never put her roots down."

Pegi has released three solo albums since 2024 and she’s toured extensively on her own, occasionally with Neil on guitar. Inspired by the lack of educational opportunities for their son Ben, who suffers From cerebral palsy, they co-founded the Bridge School in 1986, which educates children with severe physical impairments. They raise funds for it every year with an all-star concert in Mountain View, California.

Neil recently wrapped up a European Crazy Horse tour and is slated to play American solo acoustic dates in October. Pegi just concluded a brief U.S. club tour. They were both slated to play Farm Aid in Raleigh, North Carolina, on September 13th, though Pegi’s name was recently removed From the lineup.

The Girl Who Gets Gifts From Birds

The Girl Who Gets Gifts From Birds

Seattle خليجية
Continue reading the main story Lots of people love the Birds in their garden, but it’s rare for that affection to be reciprocated. One young Girl in Seattle is luckier than most. She feeds the crows in her garden – and they bring her Gifts in return.
Eight-year-old Gabi Mann sets a bead storage container on the dining room table, and clicks the lid open. This is her most precious collection.
"You may take a few close looks," she says, "but don’t touch." It’s a warning she’s most likely practised on her younger brother. She laughs after saying it though. She is happy for the audience.
Inside the box are rows of small objects in clear plastic bags. One label reads: "Black table by feeder. 2:30 p.m. 09 Nov 2024." Inside is a broken light bulb. Another bag contains small pieces of brown glass worn smooth by the sea. "Beer coloured glass," as Gabi describes it.
Each item is individually wrapped and categorised. Gabi pulls a black zip out of a labelled bag and holds it up. "We keep it in as good condition as we can," she says, before explaining this object is one of her favourites.
There’s a miniature silver ball, a black button, a blue paper clip, a yellow bead, a faded black piece of foam, a blue Lego piece, and the list goes on. Many of them are scuffed and dirty. It is an odd assortment of objects for a little Girl to treasure, but to Gabi these things are more valuable than gold.

She didn’t gather this collection. Each item was a gift – given to her by crows.
She holds up a pearl coloured heart. It is her most-prized present. "It’s showing me how much they love me."

If you want to form a bond with a crow, be consistent in rewarding them”

Gabi’s relationship with the neighbourhood crows began accidentally in 2024. She was four years old, and prone to dropping food. She’d get out of the car, and a chicken nugget would tumble off her lap. A crow would rush in to recover it. Soon, the crows were watching for her, hoping for another bite.
As she got older, she rewarded their attention, by sharing her packed lunch on the way to the bus stop. Her brother joined in. Soon, crows were lining up in the afternoon to greet Gabi’s bus, hoping for another feeding session.
Gabi’s mother Lisa didn’t mind that crows consumed most of the school lunches she packed. "I like that they love the animals and are willing to share," she says, while admitting she never noticed crows until her daughter took an interest in them. "It was a kind of transformation. I never thought about birds."
In 2024, Gabi and Lisa started offering food as a daily ritual, rather than dropping scraps From time to time.
Each morning, they fill the backyard birdbath with fresh water and cover bird-feeder platforms with peanuts. Gabi throws handfuls of dog food into the grass. As they work, crows assemble on the telephone lines, calling loudly to them.

Gabi feeding Birds in her garden

It was after they adopted this routine that the Gifts started appearing.
The crows would clear the feeder of peanuts, and leave shiny trinkets on the empty tray; an earring, a hinge, a polished rock. There wasn’t a pattern. Gifts showed up sporadically – anything shiny and small enough to fit in a crow’s mouth.
One time it was a tiny piece of ****l with the word "best" printed on it. "I don’t know if they still have the part that says ‘friend’," Gabi laughs, amused by the thought of a crow wearing a matching necklace.
When you see Gabi’s collection, it’s hard not to wish for gift-giving crows of your own.
"If you want to form a bond with a crow, be consistent in rewarding them," advises John Marzluff, professor of wildlife science at the University of Washington. He specialises in birds, particularly crows and ravens.
خليجية
What food is best? "A few peanuts in the *****," he says. "It’s a high-energy food… and it makes noise when you throw it on the ground, so they hear it and they quickly habituate to your routine."
Marzluff, and his colleague Mark Miller, did a study of crows and the people who feed them. They found that crows and people form a very personal relationship. "There’s definitely a two-way communication going on there," Marzluff says. "They understand each other’s signals."
The Birds communicate by how they fly, how close they walk, and where they sit. The human learns their ******** and the crows learn their feeder’s patterns and posture. They start to know and trust each other. Sometimes a crow leaves a gift.
But crow Gifts are not guaranteed. "I can’t say they always will (give presents)," Marzluff admits, having never received any Gifts personally, "but I have seen an awful lot of things crows have brought people."
Not all crows deliver shiny objects either. Sometimes they give the kind of presents "they would give to their mate", says Marzluff. "Courtship feeding, for example. So some people, their presents are dead baby Birds that the crow brings in."
خليجية
Gabi has been given some icky objects. Her mother threw out a rotting crab claw, for example.
Gabi points out a heavily rusted screw she prefers not to touch. It’s labelled "Third Favorite." Asking her why an untouchable object is in the favourites, she answers, "You don’t’ see a crow carrying around a screw that much. Unless it’s trying to build its house."
Lisa, Gabi’s mom, regularly photographs the crows and charts their behaviour and interactions. Her most amazing gift came just a few weeks ago, when she lost a lens cap in a nearby alley while photographing a bald eagle as it circled over the neighbourhood.
خليجية
She didn’t even have to look for it. It was sitting on the edge of the birdbath.
Had the crows returned it? Lisa logged on to her computer and pulled up their bird-cam. There was the crow she suspected. "You can see it bringing it into the yard. Walks it to the birdbath and actually spends time rinsing this lens cap."
"I’m sure that it was intentional," she smiles. "They watch us all the time. I’m sure they knew I dropped it. I’m sure they decided they wanted to return it."

Two Indian sisters gang-raped, killed and hanged from a tree

Two Indian sisters (aged 14 and 15) gang-raped, killed and hanged from a tree

Authorities in northern India have arrested three men, including two police officers, suspected of gang-raping and killing two teenage sisters before hanging their bodies from a mango tree.
The deaths have sparked renewed public outrage over sexual violence in the country.
Villagers found the girls’ bodies on Wednesday morning, hours after they disappeared from fields near their home in Katra village in Uttar Pradesh state, police superintendent Atul Saxena said. The girls, who were 14 and 15, had gone into the fields because there was no toilet in their home.
Hundreds of villagers spent the rest of the day in silent protest over alleged police inaction in the case. Indian TV channels showed video of the villagers sitting under the girls’ bodies as they swung in the wind, preventing authorities from taking them down until the suspects were arrested.
Police arrested the three men later in the day and were searching for four more suspects.
Autopsies confirmed the girls had been gang-raped and strangled before being hanged, Saxena said.
Villagers accused the local police station chief of ignoring a complaint by the girls’ father on Tuesday night that the girls were missing. The station chief has since been suspended.
The family belongs to the Dalit community, also called "untouchables" and considered the lowest rung in India’s caste system.
India tightened its anti-rape laws last year, making gang-rape punishable with the death penalty. The new laws came after nationwide protests over the fatal gang-rape of a 23-year-old woman on a moving bus in New Delhi in December 2024.
Records show a rape is committed every 22 minutes in India, a country of 1.2 billion people. Activists say the figure is an underestimate because an entrenched culture of tolerance towards sexual violence means many cases go unreported. Victims’ families and the police often often encouraged them to keep quiet, experts say, and those who do report cases are often subjected to ridicule or social stigma.
Last month, the head of Uttar Pradesh’s governing party told an election rally that the party was opposed to the law calling for gang rapists to be executed. "Boys will be boys," Mulayam Singh Yadav said. "They make mistakes."

‘Muhammad Ali’s wife has stopped me from seeing my father,’ claims his son

‘Muhammad Ali’s wife has stopped me from seeing my father’, says boxing legend’s son who lives on food stamps in the ghetto and shovels snow for a few dollars

  • Muhammad Ali Junior, 41, is the boxer’s son from his second marriage
  • His father has a total of nine children – seven daughters, Muhammad Ali Jnr and an adopted son Assaad
  • But Muhammad Ali Jnr claims he has been cut off from his father since he married his fourth wife Lonnie
  • He tried to call him on his 72nd birthday this month but couldn’t get through

The son of boxing champion Muhammad Ali has accused the millionaire’s wife of refusing to let him see his ailing father.

Muhammad Ali Junior, 41, who says he is forced to survive on food stamps in a rough Chicago neighbourhood, last saw his father on his 71st birthday a year ago.

But as the legendary boxer turned 72 on January 17, Muhammad Ali Junior claims he couldn’t even get through on the phone to wish him a happy birthday.

He alleges his father’s fourth wife of 27 years, Lonnie, has made it increasingly difficult for him to see or even speak to the retired sportsman who is in the advanced stages of Parkinson’s disease.

‘Controlling’: Lonnie, pictured with husband Muhammad Ali in 2024, has been accused of preventing members of the the boxer’s family from seeing or even speaking to him

He says more than anything he wants to see his father before he dies.

The boxer had nine children in total – seven daughter, Muhammad Ali Junior and Asaad, 22, who he adopted with Lonnie.

Muhammad Ali Junior, who lives in a tiny two bedroom flat with his wife Shaakira and two daughters Ameera, six, and Shakera, five, says he has repeatedly tried to contact his father on the phone but doesn’t have the money to make the trip to his Kentucky mansion.

He told The Sun On Sunday: ‘As soon as he married Lonnie, that’s when the problems started. We can’t see him any more. He can’t see his own brother because of Lonnie.

‘I tried calling him on his birthday but got no answer. When I call, they usually say he’s in the shower, sleeping or in therapy, and to call back.

Muhammad Ali Jnr claims he tried to contact his father, pictured in 2024, on his birthday earlier this month but he couldn’t get through. He alleges that the boxer’s fourth wife Lonnie never allows him to speak to his father

Act of kindness: Lonnie Ali’s supporters insist she is merely defending her husband from family members who wish to leech off his fame

‘When I do they don’t answer. I shouldn’t need an appointment to to see my father.’

Muhammad Ali Junior, who was born in 1972 to the boxer’s second wife 17-year-old Belinda Boyd, believes Lonnie may have cut him out because he is unemployed and doesn’t own a house or a car.

The father-of-two says he has been trying to find a job but few people are hiring so he now shovels snow off his neighbours driveway just to make a few dollars to feed his family.

He believes his father would help him with his current financial situation if he were still coherent, but says that is no longer the case.

But he insists he doesn’t care about his father’s money, he just wants to be allowed back into his life and to spend as much time together as possible in the time he has left.
Those who have defended Lonnie claim she is protecting Muhammad Ali from family members who want to sponge off his fame.

Jonathan Crombie, who played Gilbert Blythe in the Anne of Green Gables movies, has died at the age of 48, CBC News has learned.

He was also the son of David Crombie, who was mayor of Toronto from 1972 to 1978 and served as a federal Progressive Conservative cabinet minister in the 1980s.

The actor’s sister, Carrie Crombie, told CBC News on Saturday that her brother suffered a brain hemorrhage and died in New York City on April 15.

"We’ve been going through lots of stories the last couple days," she said.

"He was funny, he was sweet, he loved acting, he loved comedy and singing and dancing. As a little kid, he just loved Broadway shows and all of that kind of stuff and would sing and dance in the living room."

Answered to the name Gil

Jonathan Crombie will be best remembered for his role in the CBC TV movie Anne of Green Gables in 1984 and its two sequels in 1987 and 2000.

Carrie Crombie said her brother never shied away from the fame that came along with playing the role of Gilbert Blythe, and happily answered to the name Gil when recognized by fans on the street.

‘I think he was really proud of being Gilbert Blythe…he really enjoyed that series and was happy, very proud of it.’- Carrie Crombie
"I think he was really proud of being Gilbert Blythe and was happy to answer any questions…he really enjoyed that series and was happy, very proud of it — we all were," she said.

"[But] I think his proudest part was when he played the lead in Drowsy Chaperone on Broadway. That was just an amazing thing for him to be able to do."

Anne of Green Gables producer Kevin Sullivan said dozens of actors, including Jason Priestley, tried out for the role of Gilbert Blythe but none captured the sprit of the character.

Casting director Diane Polley, Sarah Polley’s mother, eventually discovered the then-17-year-old Crombie while he was acting in a high school play.

"She said, ‘Trust me. He’s it," Sullivan said. "We never screen-tested him. We met him and he was cast. It was a perfect storm … It just all worked perfectly."

Answered every fan letter

Sullivan said Crombie and the on-screen character he came to em**** were actually pretty similar.

‘Jonathan was as generous, as kind, as sensitive and as ambitious, in some ways, as the character he came to be identified with.’— Kevin Sullivan, producer
"I think for legions of young women around the world who fell in love with the Anne of Green Gables films, Jonathan literally represented the quintessential boy next door, and there were literally thousands of women who wrote to him over the years who saw him as a perfect mate," Sullivan said.

"I think there will be hundreds of people who will be floored that this has happened. It’s such a devastating tragedy. In reality, Jonathan was as generous, as kind, as sensitive and as ambitious, in some ways, as the character he came to be identified with."

Sullivan said Crombie and Megan Follows, the actress who played Anne Shirley in the movies, had a special relationship off screen.

"Megan was more of a seasoned professional, in some ways, than Jonathan was," he said.

"He was kind of a newbie and I just remember that they were able to ground each other extremely well and the relationship that they had was one of great affection … they were both very generous with each other and both really made those performances vivid and real."

‘Kinda quirky’

Jonathan Crombie also performed with a sketch comedy troupe featured in the Canadian TV series Comedy Now! in 1998. Carrie Crombie said her brother was incredibly passionate about improv and sketch comedy.

"John was funny. He was kinda quirky in some ways," she said.

"Like he would only take the bus back and forth from Toronto to New York. And, to be honest, that’s how we are going to be bringing him back. We felt that it was an ode to Jonathan. He would never go on a plane, so we’re going to make the trek from New York to Toronto on a bus with his ashes."

Crombie said her brother just didn’t feel it necessary to spend the money required to make the journey by plane.

"He always seemed to attract interesting people on buses. He always had great stories about characters on buses, so we always had fun listening to his impersonations."

Carrie Crombie said she didn’t think her brother had any major health issues, and was committed to staying healthy. She said his organs have been donated, which is something he would have been proud of.

She said a "huge, wonderful celebration of life" will be held in his honour some time in the coming weeks.

Get out of the goove! Now Radio 1 bans Madonna, 56, for being ‘irrelevant and old’ for its teenage listeners

  • Radio 1 has banned Madonna for being ‘irrelevant and old’ for its listeners
  • The 56-year-old singer has been dropped from the station’s playlist

She has dominated the airwaves during 30 years as a chart-topper, but now Radio 1 has decided that Madonna is an immaterial girl and just too old for its teenage listeners.
Despite her determined efforts to look – and sound – youthful, the 56-year-old has been dropped from the station’s playlist that determines which songs are played by DJs during the day.
Madonna’s latest song is Living For Love and has been available for airplay since December 20 last year.

Madonna, pictured, has been placed on the Radio 1 no-play list because at 56 she is too old for their listeners

Yet it has been played on Radio 1 just once – on January 9 when DJ Annie Mac played it on her evening show. But that was after 7pm, when songs not on the playlist can be broadcast.
The track is the first single from the mother of four’s new album, Rebel Heart. The station last night said the single had been omitted from playlists on the basis of ‘audience relevance’ and ‘musical merit’.

A Radio 1 insider said: ‘At the end of the day it’s all about relevance. It’s natural that as an artist gets older their audience goes elsewhere and Radio 1 has to reflect that.
‘The station has a duty to meet the needs of younger listeners. I don’t think the audience is losing sleep that it is not playing Madonna in the same way that it used to.’
The snub represents a remarkable fall from grace for the star who notched up 13 UK No 1s between 1985 and 2024. She finds herself alongside Sir Cliff Richard, Take That, Kate Bush and Robbie Williams on a long list of artists who struggle to get new material played on the station.

Madonna’s single is being played on Radio 2, which caters for an audience aged over 35. By contrast, Sir Paul McCartney’s new single will be played by Radio 1 even though the former Beatle is 72. This is because the track is a collaboration with rapper Kanye West, 37, and pop mega-star Rihanna, 26.
A Radio 1 spokesman said: ‘Tracks are chosen on musical merit, and while around 40 per cent of the country’s 15 to 29-year-olds tune into Radio 1 each week, an artist’s age is never a factor.’
Madonna’s spokesman declined to comment.
