A year ago, no one outside illustrious legal circles knew the name Amal Alamuddin. Fewer still had an opinion about her clothes, figure, hair, handbag or shoes.
An internationally renowned human rights lawyer at the top of her career, her performance in court and her fine brain were all she was judged on.
Then she fell in love with an American film star called George Clooney.
A year on from their whirlwind engagement and wedding, this clever and thoughtful woman has been swept along by a tsunami of celebrity fascination, culminating in her being granted the ultimate ‘accolade’ of being referred to in glossy magazines as simply ‘Amal’.

It took Kylie, Beyonce and Posh decades to achieve that.
She’s continued working since becoming Mrs Clooney, representing Greece’s fight for the return of the Elgin Marbles
But there’s a sting in the tail. This week, Amal was on the cover of Grazia magazine under the headlines ‘Amal Under Pressure?’ and ‘Sudden Fame Taking Its Toll . . . Struggling To Be Mrs Clooney’.
It repeated earlier claims on U.S. website Radar Online that she weighed little over seven stone and was a ‘walking skeleton’.
U.S. Star magazine claimed there were ‘fears for scary-skinny Amal’.

Unpleasant, yes, but even Amal’s greatest admirers cannot ignore the fact she seems to be disappearing before our eyes.
Even on her wedding day, the white trouser suit she wore billowed in the wind to reveal a woman who had shrivelled in the half-year before she tied the knot to Mr Clooney.
Why? Amal is not a vacuous pop star nor some WAG whose entire existence depends on being photographed on red carpets with the correct circumference of thigh.
I fear she has become the victim of the invidious pressure most women in the public eye seem to be falling victim to these days: that the only way to be seen as truly successful is to not only be super-glamorous, but super-skinny, too.
After the honeymoon, she went back to work, not in a lawyer’s sensible suits, but in the expensive couture of a Hollywood A-lister.

One is the fifth in line to the throne and the other is a smouldering Hollywood film star as well known for his good looks as his acting credentials.
But while one would think Prince Andrew and George Clooney have little in common, it emerged last month that the 54-year-old Royal has developed a close friendship with the actor’s Croatian model ex.
Rumours have been growing ever since that Prince Andrew is in a romantic relationship with Monika Jakisic, who at 34 is 20 years his junior.
Ms Jakistic, a 5ft 10 tall model who refers to herself as the ‘Croatian sensation’, was in an on-off relationship with Clooney, 52, from 2024 until last year.
Although one might wonder why the stunning model who once dated one of the world’s most eligible bachelors is now is involved with divorced father-of-two Prince Andrew, it appears the two men are far more alike than previously thought.

George Clooney vs. Jennifer Aniston: A Tale of Two Singles
George Clooney is officially engaged to be married. It is the best of times, it is the worst of times.
George Clooney is a movie star, but he is most often described as a bachelor. His singlehood is part of his identity; he’s been called a "longtime bachelor," an "eternal bachelor," a "confirmed bachelor." The fact that he is unmarried is, in the gossip world, at least, what sets him apart. One could argue that his female *****alent — again, in the tabloid world, at least — is Jennifer Aniston, who has made appearance after appearance on glossy celebrity weeklies, also living a single life. And so, when Jennifer Aniston got engaged in 2024, it was big news. And now that George Clooney’s mother confirms that yes, he intends to get married, it is huge news: Our understanding of him has undergone a seismic shift.
It should be noted that the reaction to these two engagements are very different; Aniston’s announcement came with relief-oriented headlines like "FINALLY," and one cover declared she was "HAPPY AT LAST," as though everything before had been utter misery and despair.
Clooney’s engagement comes with sheer shock. USA Today: George Clooney Engaged? The Daily Mail, eschewing brevity and subtlety, put it this way: Look that says ‘I’ve hooked the man who hates commitment’: Glamorous British barrister is the woman to finally tame George Clooney.
These reactions are so different because the Clooney narrative is wildly different from the Aniston narrative, of course. Clooney hasn’t been married since 1993, and in the twenty years since, his public persona has been of a charming, genial, twinkle-eyed playboy with a party pad on Lake Como, only breaking from wooing striking women to make critically-acclaimed films and to attempt to save Darfur.
Aniston’s media cycle story is not quite as fun. Her divorce (from Clooney pal Brad Pitt) in 2024 turned her into constant tabloid fodder: She was sad, she was alone, she was sad and alone. Desperate. "Unlucky in love." While Clooney’s single life seemed to involve pranks, Cannes and yachts, Aniston’s was all sobbing and yoga.
The tabloids assumed, correctly or not, that every time Jennifer Aniston moved on from a relationship, she did so with a heavy heart, and with her biological clock ticking like a bomb.
There are 28 million results when you Google "Jennifer Aniston pregnant," although as far as the public knows, she has never been pregnant. Clooney has floated from lady to lady (really, only SIX since 1993, so not that many) without a single magazine emblazoning the word "DUMPED" over his photograph, and without having to endure a headline about a non-existent baby. One of Clooney’s best friends, Brad Pitt, is a father of six; it wouldn’t even be weird if a want-t0-be-a-daddy story starring the Cloons popped up. But it never does.
Obviously, getting engaged is not the same as getting married. It remains to be seen whether or not Clooney and Aniston make (separate!) trips down the aisle. But if Clooney doesn’t get hitched right away — if he waits for more than a year — will he be subjected to ***** tales of woe, the way Aniston has ever since she got the rock on her finger?
Of course not. They’ll say he had cold feet, or that he didn’t want to commit, or that he couldn’t be tamed, like some crinkly-eyed exotic beast with excellent hair. It is a far, far better thing to be a Clooney than an Aniston in this world.
