Soul Legend Bobby Womack dead at 70

Veteran singer had numerous hits, yet suffered multiple health issues throughout seven-decade career

خليجية

Bobby Womack, the legendary Soul singer whose career spanned seven decades, died Friday at age 70. A representative for Womack’s label XL Recordings confirmed the singer has died to Rolling Stone, but said the cause of death was currently unknown.

The son of two musicians, Womack began his career as a member of Curtis Womack and the Womack Brothers with his siblings Curtis, Harry, Cecil and Friendly Jr. After Sam ***** signed the group to his SAR Records in 1960, they released a handful of gospel singles before changing their name to the Valentinos and earning success with a more secular, soul- and pop-influenced sound. In 1964, one month after the Valentinos released their hit "It’s All Over Now," the Rolling Stones put out their version, which went to Number One on the U.K. singles charts.

Three months after the death of ***** in 1964, Womack married *****’s widow, Barbara Campbell, and the Valentinos disbanded after the collapse of SAR Records. After leaving the group, Womack became a session musician, playing guitar on several albums, including Aretha Franklin’s landmark Lady Soul, before releasing his debut album, Fly Me to the Moon, in 1968. A string of successful R&B albums would follow, including Understanding and Across 110th Street, both released in 1972, 1973’sFacts of Life and 1974’s Lookin for a Love Again.

After the death of his brother, Harry, in 1974, Womack’s career stalled, but was revived in 1981 with the R&B hit "If You Think You’re Lonely Now." Throughout most of the Eighties, the singer struggled with drug addiction, eventually checking himself into a rehabilitation center for treatment. A series of health problems would follow, including diabetes, pneumonia, colon cancer and the early signs of Alzheimer’s disease, though it was unclear if any of these ailments contributed to his death. Womack was declared cancer-free in 2024.

In 2024, Womack began a career renaissance with the release of The Bravest Man in the Universe, his first album in more than 10 years. Produced by Damon Albarn and XL’s Richard Russell, the album made Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Albums of 2024 alongside numerous other critical accolades. "You know more at 65 than you did at 25. I understand the songs much better now," Womack told Rolling Stone at the time. "It’s not about 14 Rolls Royces and two Bentleys. Even if this album never sells a nickel, I know I put my best foot forward." Upon his death, Womack was in the process of recording his next album for XL, tentatively titled The Best Is Yet to Come and reportedly featuring contributions by Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart and Snoop Dogg.

Womack was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024. "My very first thought was — I wish I could call Sam ***** and share this moment with him," Womack said. "This is just about as exciting to me as being able to see Barack Obama become the first black President of the United States of America! It proves that, if you’re blessed to be able to wait on what’s important to you, a lot of things will change in life."

Charged with contaminating beverages

By JOHN WHARTON Staff writer

A Mechanicsville Woman has been arrested on charging papers alleging she contaminated milk served to family members at a residence, with shavings of dead skin from her feet.

Sarah P. Schrock, 56, was jailed May 6 in lieu of 10 percent of $10,000 bond on the food contamination charge, and committing a second-degree assault on Jessica Whitney Hurry and a 3-year-old girl during the May 4 incident at the residence off Golden Beach Road.

Schrock was alone at the home that day until Hurry and the child arrived at dinner time, and they were drinking the milk when the child began choking and coughed up what looked like dead human skin, according to court papers filed by St. Mary’s sheriff’s Cpl. Jaime Davis.

Hurry also gagged, court papers state, and a witness found dead skin shavings in the milk after pouring it into a strainer.

Hurry told police that the suspect has dry feet because of diabetes, and that she “has trays in her room with the same kind of dead skin shavings that had come off of her feet,” according to a statement of probable cause filed by the deputy.

Schrock, found at a motel room in Charlotte Hall, “denied having any involvement” in putting anything in the family’s milk, court papers state. She also was charged with violating a protective order issued last month requiring that she have no contact with Hurry.

He was a three-time champion of the NWA and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2024.

Rik Mayall, one of a generation of performers that injected post-punk energy into British comedy, has died. He was 56.
Mayall’s management firm Brunskill Management said the comedian died at his London home on Monday.
In the 1980s Mayall was part of the Comic Strip, a hugely influential group of alternative young comics that included Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders and Mayall’s writing and performing partner, Adrian Edmondson.
He was best known for co-writing and performing in "The Young Ones," a sitcom about slovenly students that was much loved by those it satirized.
On television he memorably played Conservative politician Alan B’stard in the sitcom "The New Statesman" and lecherous Lord Flashheart in comedy classic "Blackadder."
He and Edmondson also created and starred in "Bottom," a surreally violent slapstick series about two unemployed slobs.
Film appearances included the title role in 1991 fantasy "Drop dead Fred" — which gained him a U.S. cult following — and 1999 British comedy "Guest House Paradiso."
"There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing," Edmondson said. "They were some of the most carefree, stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. And now he’s died for real. Without me. Selfish bastard."
The cause of death was not immediately disclosed. London’s Metropolitan Police force said officers had been called to the house by the ambulance service on Monday, but that the death was not believed to be suspicious.
In 1998 Mayall was on life support and in a coma for several days after an all-terrain vehicle accident.
"The main difference between now and before my accident is I’m just very glad to be alive," Mayall said last year.
"Other people get moody in their 40s and 50s — men get the male menopause. I missed the whole thing. I was just really happy."

The model for Norman Rockwell’s 1943 Rosie the Riveter painting that symbolized the millions of American women who went to work on the homefront during Second World War has died. Mary Doyle Keefe was 92.

Mary Ellen Keefe says her mother died Tuesday in Simsbury, Conn., after a brief illness.
Keefe grew up in Arlington, Vt., where she met Rockwell and posed for his painting when she was a 19-year-old telephone operator. The painting was on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post on May 29, 1943.
Although Keefe was petite, Rockwell’s Rosie the Riveter had large arms and shoulders. The painting shows Rosie sitting down in work overalls, with a rivet gun on her lap and her foot on a copy of Adolf Hitler’s manifesto Mein Kampf.
