Vet Says Veterans’ Suicide Line Repeatedly Put Him on Hold

Vet Says Veterans' Suicide Line Repeatedly Put Him on Hold

It’s been nearly a year since last year’s audit detailing just how dire things are for veterans in need of medical attention , and apparently, not all that much has changed. According to veteran Ted Koran, he recently called the VA’s Suicide hotline only to be be put on Hold for up to ten minutes at a time—multiple times.

As Koran told ABC News, he suffered an emotional breakdown this past Saturday night after losing his wife to cancer six months ago. Finding himself on the brink of suicide, the Air Force vet decided to reach out to the VA, which responded to his call with a soothing refrain of try again later. From ABC’s report:

The U.S. Air Force veteran first called the James Haley VA Center in Tampa, where a recording gave him the 800 number to the hotline. Koran said he was placed on Hold for 10 minutes.

“I had to sit there patiently, in emotional distress, in tears, wanting to give up, desperately needing someone to talk to,” Koran said.

Koran said he hung up and redialed the number two more times.

“They had me on the [verge] of saying to hell with it,” he said.

Koran’s not alone. According to last year’s audit , over 57,000 vets had been forced to wait three months or more for medical care. Thousands more were never able to schedule appointments at all.

Even more recently, a Scripps investigation just this past February found that many vets calling for help either were either sent to voicemail or received no answer at all. Which is probably to be expected when a mere 52 operators are tasked with handling thousands of calls a day.

According to the VA’s own estimates, roughly 22 veterans commit Suicide every day.

February 5, 2024 (RALEIGH, N.C.) — An 11-year-old boy is in the hospital after trying to commit suicide — the victim of bullying at school.

Michael Morones remains in WakeMed hospital with a tube down his throat and potentially life-long brain damage. Michael tried to kill himself, apparently because he could no longer take the torrent of bullying he was facing at school.

"He’s the kid that never walks. He dances everywhere," said Michael’s mother, Tiffany Morones-Suttle. "He’s so full of energy. He’s always on the move."

Michael’s parents say he was that way even in the face of daunting bullying at school. Michael likes the cartoon "My Little Pony." It turns out, the cartoon has a growing, and perhaps unlikely fan club — men and boys known as "Bronies." Because of that, Michael was teased so much that ten days ago he decided to do something about it.

"He hung himself off the side of the bunk bed, off the railing," said Morones-Suttle.

His parents got him to the hospital, but the damage had already been done. Oxygen to his brain had been cut off.

"We won’t know for months how much is going to heal," said Morones-Suttle. "It could even be years before we find out what potential for healing he has."

You might think Michael’s parents would be furious with the kids who were bullying their son, but that wouldn’t be in keeping with the show at the center of what they were teasing him about.

"It teaches the most basic moral values to a lot of complex thoughts," said Michael’s stepfather, Shannon Suttle.

Fans of the show, like Michael, try to live the motto that friendship is magic.

"I’ve heard a lot of people say you need to go after bullies and hold them responsible," said Morones-Suttle. "But you know, I don’t think that’s what Mike would want. I would rather teach people how to do right than turn around than punish, because punishment doesn’t always work."

Michael has gotten support from as far away as Ireland, and a lot of money, which is used for Michael’s care, but also to start a nonprofit to help with bullying. As Michael’s father tells it, it’s more than their goal. It’s quickly become their mission.

Incredibly, the bullying hasn’t stopped. Michael’s parents say just Sunday night on a generally supportive ***site, a few people left hurtful comments. They say that just strengthens their resolve to fight bullying, and makes that mission that much more clear.

Bullying prevention expert Nancy Mullin said Michael’s age is right in the prime age for suicides.

"Eleven to 15-year-old boys are very much at risk for thinking about suicide when they’re perceived as being gay," said Mullin.

She credits Michael’s parents with supporting his interest rather than reinforcing shameful feelings.

"The missing piece here is what the school is doing about this," said Mullin.

Mullin says while North Carolina is one of 49 states with bullying prevention laws, not enough is being done to implement programs.

Michael was scheduled to have a tracheotomy Tuesday.

Gene Simmons’ Depression and Suicide Comments Anger Nikki Sixx

No one will ever accuse Kiss’ Gene Simmons of not speaking his mind. One day after Simmons and his Kiss Army were ordered to surrender by the Black Lips, resulting in an ill-fated "learn English" jab by Simmons, the bassist made some irresponsible Comments about Depression that have angered Mötley Crüe’s Nikki Sixx, Loudwire reports.

In an interview with Songfacts.com, Simmons essentially dismissed Depression as a mental disorder. "For a putz 20-year-old kid to say, ‘I’m depressed. I live in Seattle.’ Fuck you, then kill yourself. I never understand, because I always call them on their bluff. I’m the guy who says ‘Jump’ when there’s a guy on top of a building who says, ‘That’s it, I can’t take it anymore. I’m going to jump.’ Are you kidding? Why are you announcing it? Shut the fuck up, have some dignity and jump! You’ve got the crowd," Simmons said. "By the way, you walk up to the same guy on a ledge who threatens to jump and put a gun to his head, ‘I’m going to blow your fuckin’ head off.’ He’ll go, ‘Please don’t.’ It’s true. He’s not that insane."

Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx chastised Simmons on his Sixx Sense radio show. "It’s pretty moronic because [Simmons] thinks every**** listens to him, that he is the God of Thunder. He will tell you he is the greatest man on earth, and to be honest with you, I like Gene. But in this situation, I don’t like Gene. I don’t like Gene’s words," Sixx said. "There is a 20-year-old kid out there who is a Kiss fan and reads this and goes, ‘You know what? He’s right. I should just kill myself.’"

Sixx added, "For people who are depressed, there is a way out. There are many, many ways out. And I don’t want people to listen to an interview from a rock star, who’s telling you the only way out is out." Sixx is just the latest person to get mad at something Simmons has spouted. Previously, the Kiss bassist generated some controversy when he said he supported Donald Sterling in the fight over the Los Angeles Clippers, adding that while what Sterling said was "heinous," he shouldn’t be castigated for remarks made in private.

Monica Lewinsky Considered Suicide and 4 Other Revelations

Monica Lewinsky Considered Suicide and 4 Other Revelations

After 10 years of silence — a decade of dodging questions about the infamous stain on her blue dress and the jokes about the president’s cigar — Bill Clinton’s mistress, Monica Lewinsky, spoke out in Vanity Fair.

Here’s what she had to say:

She May Not Stay Quiet if Hillary Runs

Lewinsky says she “remained virtually reclusive” during Hillary Clinton’s 2024 campaign despite repeated interview requests.

Now that Hillary is reportedly mulling a 2024 bid, Lewinsky finds herself “gun-shy yet again, fearful of ‘becoming an issue’ should she decide to ramp up her campaign.” But she’s not sure she’ll stay quiet this time.

The 40-year-old, who says she’s still recognized everywhere she goes, has had enough of “tiptoeing around my past — and Other people’s futures.”

So though she acknowledges speaking out may have severe ramifications, ”I’ve decided, finally, to stick my head above the parapet so that I can take back my narrative and give a purpose to my past … It’s time to burn the beret and bury the blue dress.”

What She Finds ‘Troubling’ About Hillary

Lewinsky seems to resent Hillary Clinton’s reaction — and rejects the then-first lady’s characterization of her as a “narcissistic loony toon.”

“Mrs. Clinton, I read, had supposedly confided to [Diane] Blair that, in part, she blamed herself for her husband’s affair (by being emotionally neglectful) and seemed to forgive him … I find her impulse to blame the Woman — not only me, but herself — troubling,” Lewinsky argues.

Her refusal to cooperate with interrogators may have been “courageous or foolish,” she admits. “But narcissistic and loony?” No way.

The Relationship Was Consensual

Lewinsky maintains that her relationship with Clinton was voluntary.

“Sure, my boss took advantage of me, but I will always remain firm on this point: it was a consensual relationship,” Lewinsky writes. “Any ‘abuse’ came in the aftermath, when I was made a scapegoat in order to protect his powerful position.”

Nevertheless, she says, she “regrets” the relationship.

“Let me say it again: I. Myself. Deeply. Regret. What. Happened.,” she writes.

The Clintons Didn’t Pay Her Off

The Clintons didn’t bribe her to stay quiet, Lewinsky insists.

“Nothing could be further from the truth,” she writes.

She turned down $10 million-plus “offers” (presumably interview requests) “because they didn’t feel like the right thing to do.”

However, money has been an issue since the incident. Lewinsky pursued a career in marketing, but “because of what potential employers so tactfully referred to as my ‘history, I was never ‘quite right’ for the position.”

She has ”managed to get by (barely, at times) with my own projects… or loans from friends,” she says.

She Contemplated Suicide

Though she never actually attempted suicide, Lewinsky says she was tempted end her own life as “the shame, the scorn, and the fear” washed over her.

She says the tragic Suicide of 18-year-old Tyler Clementi, the gay Rutgers student who was filmed kissing another man, brought back those terrible memories and inspired her to come forward.

“Perhaps by sharing my story … I might be able to help others in their darkest moments of humiliation,” Lewinksi says.

Zelda Williams on dad Robin’s suicide "we don’t have an explanation"

Zelda Williams on dad Robin’s suicide "we don’t have an explanation"

Zelda had an interview air on The Today Show this morning, conducted by Kate Snow. You can see the videos in two parts, below. Zelda impressed me so much, especially in light of some of the invasive questions Snow was asking. Zelda talked about how she’s grieving following the loss of her dad, and how she’s trying to move forward in her life. Zelda came across as vulnerable and honest but straightforward and practical. Here’s some of what she said.

Grieving for her dad
For me especially it’s going to take a lot of work to allow myself the fun happy life that I had.

On the outpouring of love for her dad
There was an enormous outpouring of love from every corner of the world… the side of him that people know and love and that is attached to their childhood is the characters that he had so much fun being and that’s what’s important. I do think that’s what a lot of people will hold on to… for the most part it’s nice to have just our private life be our private life.

She was asked if she ever wonders why her dad committed suicide
I don’t think there’s a point [to wonder why]. It’s not important to ask.

People want to know why her dad took his own life

Diseases are – until we find out exactly how they work, we don’t have an explanation. There’s no one I can offer. A lot of people who have been through it and lost someone… who have gone on to lead very full lives know that there’s no point questioning it and there’s no point blaming yourself or the world… it happened so you have to continue to live and manage.

On public acceptance of mental illness

One of the things that is changing that is wonderful is that people are starting to approach talking about illnesses that people can’t immediately see. I want people to be more accepting.
It was important for [my dad] for people to talk about important things. He didn’t like people feeling like the things that were hard for them, they should go through alone. That’s the big legacy for him.

On what people should remember about her dad

People should remember what they want to remember of him. Who am I to guide what their childhood memories are of watching his movie.

Sources say the still-unidentified woman had been convalescing under the care of the staff of Dr. Brian Novack after undergoing a procedure the day before.

THR has learned that the office of A-list Beverly Hills plastic Surgeon Dr. Brian Novack – well regarded in Hollywood’s nip-and-tuck realm for what’s whispered to be his stellar but high-priced work on Demi Moore and other forever-young clients – is at the center of the Golden Triangle Suicide tragedy that transpired on Wednesday morning.

Multiple sources in the local medical community say the 53-year-old woman, who jumped to her death from the top of a 15-story office building at about 10 a.m., had been staying overnight under the supervision of Novack’s staff after having undergone a Facelift the day before. (She was to be discharged to an after-care facility for further convalescence later that day.) The Beverly Hills Police Department and the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office have yet to release her ****.

STORY: Woman Jumps From Building in Beverly Hills
The building at 414 N. Camden Dr. is mostly filled with aesthetics-oriented doctors who specialize in everything from restorative dentistry to hair implants.

Early Wednesday morning, the woman became agitated and aggressive, revealed a source who works in the building, pulling at her hair and pulling off her gown before escaping Novack’s 10th-floor office suite to the roof, where she sat naked for several hours, with her legs dramatically dangling off the edge. Police crisis negotiators unsuccessfully attempted to talk her down from the ledge as nearby streets were shut down. The Los Angeles Fire Department sent an engine and paramedic company to cover a Beverly Hills fire station during this period since the entirety of the city’s fire force was assigned to the incident.

An eyewitness who was watching the incident from a nearby office ****** told THR: "She sat on the ledge naked, then got up and walked around the edge of the building as if on a tightrope. She sat back down again before getting up and jumping off." This witness described the woman as a blonde Caucasian. "It was very traumatic to watch, especially as I was with my 11-year-old daughter and she saw it all."

Reached for comment about the death, a man in Novack’s office who did not identify himself would say only "we are not giving out any information about the incident that happened at our building." A medical staffer who works for another doctor in the building said that she witnessed Novack grieving in the lobby after the woman’s **** had been taken away. "He looked demolished," she said.

By Thursday evening, one orange Beverly Hills traffic cone in front of the building – which sits just a few feet from Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Lisa Vanderpump’s Villa Blanca restaurant – had become a makeshift memorial. Passersby adorned it with flowers, lighting votives next to it and trading stories of the day before.

Reuters 42 minutes ago

A prominent lawyer and leader of the Mississippi Tea Party, who was arrested in connection with photos posted online of U.S. Senator Thad Cochran’s bedridden wife, died on Friday of an apparent suicide, the man’s attorney said.

Mark Mayfield, 58, was a founding member of the state’s Tea Party and had served as its vice chairman, the organization said.

"This is a terrible tragedy that shouldn’t have happened," Mayfield’s lawyer and brother-in-law, John Reeves, told Reuters.

Mayfield was one of three men accused in May of conspiring with a blogger to illicitly take photos of Cochran’s wife, who has dementia, in her nursing home for use in a political video against the six-term incumbent.

Mayfield was charged with conspiracy to photograph someone without permission, an allegation met with shock and some skepticism in the legal community where he was highly regarded.

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant was among those who expressed sadness on Friday, calling Mayfield a long-time friend.

“A good number of us just simply refused to believe that he had anything to do, at least on any criminal level, with what happened with the nursing home scandal,” said attorney Matt Eichelberger, who blogs about progressive politics in the state.

Mayfield’s death comes after state Senator Chris McDaniel, who had the backing of conservative Tea Party groups, lost a bitterly contested primary runoff against Cochran on Tuesday for the Republican Senate nomination.

McDaniel, who has denied any connection to the photo conspiracy, has accused Cochran’s camp of slandering him by insinuating his involvement.

Mayfield, a lifelong resident of Mississippi who practiced real estate law, bowed out of politics after his arrest, said Merrida Coxwell, another attorney who represented him.

Coxwell said he last spoke with Mayfield on Wednesday, when they discussed the criminal case but not the results of Tuesday’s election. He said he had urged Mayfield to be patient.

“I don’t know what was on his mind,” Coxwell said. “I guess just being charged, for a man of Mark’s kind sensibilities, was too much.”
