The day that Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson can’t make it work is the day when love dies completely. We’ll have to pack it in and understand that no marriage works and that no two people can ever be perfect for one another. Thankfully, they haven’t really split up, according to In Touch Weekly. In Touch merely says that Tom and Rita needed a brief break from each other because they were getting on each other’s nerves. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have been nearly inseparable during an August getaway at their home on the Greek island of Antiparos. But just weeks prior, things weren’t so rosy. In Touch has exclusively learned that the couple, married for 26 years, temporarily split for a month.

“They hit a rough patch. They were leading separate lives,” a friend exclusively tells In Touch, revealing that for a month, Rita lived alone in their $26 million modern mansion in Pacific Palisades while her husband stayed at a producer pal’s home in tony Malibu Colony before leaving to film his new movie, A Hologram for the King, in Egypt.

“Although they attended social functions and walked their dog together,” a source says of the pair, “they were living in separate residences.”

According to the friend, “they just weren’t seeing eye to eye.” But the couple survived their temporary split by refusing to give up. “Tom and Rita are not just husband and wife, they are best friends. It will take a lot to split this couple up for good.”

When asked about the separation, reps for both stars declined to comment.

I think the “they still walked their dog together” thing is maybe the most bizarre detail. After 26 years, it might just be an empty nest thing. Their kids are grown up and Rita and Tom have to figure out their marriage post-parenting. Thus, the dogs come into play. They need more dogs. Some people just can’t function unless they’re taking care of someone or something. Still, I believe in them. I believe in Tom & Rita. And Kyra Sedgwick & the Bacon. If those couple ever split for good, there’s no hope for any of us.

PS… You know what I love? I love that Rita isn’t Botoxed to hell. That’s so *******ing.
