“The world has a difficult time with the female auteur”: “I have nothing against Kanye West. I’m not dissing him–this is about how people talk about him. With the last album he did, he got all the best beatmakers on the planet at the time to make beats for him. A lot of the time, he wasn’t even there. Yet no one would question his authorship for a second. If whatever I’m saying to you now helps women, I’m up for saying it. For example, I did 80% of the beats on Vespertine and it took me three years to work on that album, because it was all microbeats–it was like doing a huge embroidery piece. Matmos came in the last two weeks and added percussion on top of the songs, but they didn’t do any of the main parts, and they are credited everywhere as having done the whole album. [Matmos’] Drew [Daniel] is a close friend of mine, and in every single interview he did, he corrected it. And they don’t even listen to him. It really is strange.”

On taking credit: “When people don’t credit me for the stuff I’ve done, it’s for several reasons. One! I learned what a lot of Women have to do is make the guys in the room think it was their idea, and then you back them up. Two! I spend 80% of the writing process of my albums on my own. I write the melodies. I’m by the computer. I edit a lot. That for me is very solitary. I don’t want to be photographed when I’m doing that. I don’t invite people around. The 20% of the album process when I bring in the string orchestras, the extras, that’s ********ed more. That’s the side people see. When I met M.I.A., she was moaning about this, and I told her, ‘Just photograph yourself in front of the mixing desk in the studio, and people will go, ‘Oh, OK! A woman with a tool, like a man with a guitar.’ I remember seeing a photo of Missy Elliott at the mixing desk in the studio and being like, a-ha! it’s an ongoing battle. I hope it doesn’t come across as too defensive, but it is the truth. I definitely can feel the third or fourth feminist wave in the air, so maybe this is a good time to open that Pandora’s box a little bit and air it out.”

The Huffington Post’s new longform section has a fascinating, deeply disturbing feature today about the Runaways, the all-girl rock band that rocketed Joan Jett and Lita Ford to fame. The group’s former bassist, Jackie Fuchs, has spoken for the first time about her exploitation by producer Kim Fowley, who she says raped her in front of the entire band.

Fowley, who died in January of this year at 75, was a legendary producer and musician, involved in a string of 40 hits, helping to shape glam rock as a genre and even appearing in a Beyoncé video (“Haunted”) not long before his death. “The Lost Girls,” by reporter Jason Cherkis, is one of the first stories in HuffPo’s new Highline section; it clearly outlines how Fowley groomed 15- and 16-year-old girls, talking all the while about his fondness for “young cunt” or “dirty pussy.” His behavior was both sexually abusive and outright violent, several women interviewed say:

The musicians and journalists who formed Fowley’s inner circle back then wanted to see his menace as an act, a test to weed out the weak. But some of his behavior was simply too violent to dismiss. In September 1975, Audrey Pavia, who had just turned 18, ended up backstage at an early Runaways show, when the band was just a trio. Without warning, Fowley ran at her from across the room.

“He threw me up against the wall and he put his arm across my neck,” Pavia remembers. “Then he hammered his knee between my legs.” Fowley lifted her up off the ground and licked her face. He bit and sucked on her ear. She says she struggled to get away, but he pinned her to the wall for five minutes, telling her all the things he was going to do to her.

“I was terrified. I was embarrassed,” Pavia says. “This is the part that’s most embarrassing for me. … I was a virgin. This was the most physical contact I’d had with a man.” Afterward, she noticed that her hair was matted with his spit.

Another aspiring musician/songwriter, Kari Krome, says she met Fowley at Alice Cooper’s birthday party when she was just 13, and that he groomed her for months, talking to her on the phone for hours about music. He signed her to a contract before she turned 14, and, soon after, took her to his apartment, which everyone referred to as the Dog Palace, and sexually assaulted her:

When Krome asked what was going on, he said something like, “It’s time for dog worship” and told her if she didn’t give in to his sexual demands, she’d have to go back to Long Beach. Krome thought about leaving, calling someone for a ride. But her family was poor and didn’t have a telephone. She had nowhere to go. That night, Fowley masturbated on her.

“I didn’t know how to say, ‘I don’t want you to do this,’” Krome says. “I did not have that voice. … I was also scared of him. He could be really scary.”

Fowley sexually assaulted her several other times, Krome says. “In his mind, he thought he was having a relationship with me, like a romantic relationship,” she says. “He didn’t care what I thought about it. He just decided.”

Fuchs formally joined the Runaways in 1975, when she was 16, becoming known by the stage name Jackie Fox. At a party soon after, she says, she was given a Quaalude by a roadie and lay immobilized in a room full of people as Fowley raped her.

Cherkis reached out to Joan Jett, who was supposedly at the party and in the room, for comment:

Jett, through a representative, denied witnessing the event as it has been described here. Her representative referred all further questions to Jackie “as it’s a matter involving her and she can speak for herself.”

Krome, though, recalls Jett and Cherie Currie nearby and “snickering” during the attack, and Cherkis reports that it appears to have become a running joke with the other band members (who were, let’s remember, young girls themselves):

Victory Tischler-Blue was Jackie’s replacement on bass, and one of her main memories from her time as a Runaway was how some of the other members made fun of what happened to Jackie. “I heard about that nonstop,” she says now. “They would talk about Kim fucking Jackie like a dog. It was kind of a running joke.”

Cherkis points out, too, that Fowley always denied sexually abusing The Runaways, quoted in a 2024 band biography as saying, “They can talk about it until the cows come home but, in my mind, I didn’t make love to any**** in the Runaways nor did they make love to me.” And that may be right, in that “love” is no one’s term for what Fuchs says happened to her.

Kristen Stewart: Women who get plastic surgery are ‘losing their minds’

In typical Kristen Stewart fashion, the actress is calling it like she sees it.
The 25-year-old Clouds of Sils Maria star covers the latest issue of Harper’s Bazaar U.K. and opens up about sexism in Tinsel Town, calling Hollywood "disgustingly sexist" and adding that "fame is the worst thing in the world."
In addition to her cover story, the former Twilight stunner, who has been in the biz since she was a little girl, shares her beauty secrets and her exercise regime as well as her thoughts on plastic surgery.

"I either like being really sexy or insanely androgynous," the brunette stunner reveals. "I’m not great at applying make-up myself. My mom never taught me anything, she doesn’t wear make-up…I like mineral make-up. You can’t screw it up and it’s not bad for your skin."
When it comes to plastic surgery, Stewart has strong opinions and has no desire whatsoever to go under the knife.
"No, never. Never," she says of plastic surgery. "I am so freaked out by the idea of doing anything. And maybe that’s completely arrogant but I don’t want to change anything about myself. I think the Women who do are losing their minds. It’s vandalism."

Stewart’s desire to stay true to herself is often apparent—the Runaways star is regularly spotted on the red carpet wearing Converse sneakers and she refuses to conform to the industry’s beauty standards.
"I don’t like having nice hair, ever," she explains of her signature messy ‘do. "There’s something about it that pushes me over into feeling like I’m wearing a costume. So long as I can have my hair the way it normally is, then I can do everything else full on."

As for her workout routine? Turns out Stewart, who previously played an army guard stationed at Guantanamo Bay for her role in Camp X-Ray, is one tough gal.
"When I’m in good shape I can do 40 push-ups in one go," she reveals. "If I’m not in good shape, I can do 10. If I am trying to get into shape and I want to be strong, I’ll drop and do 20 every half hour throughout the day. I can do 250 push-ups in a day, which is pretty impressive. At the moment, I can do 20 comfortably. It takes me about a month to get into phenomenal shape with a trainer."

How Does the Humane Society of the United States Spend Their Money?

HSUS ****ter Spending in Your State

As we’ve previously reported, only about 1% of the budget of the deceptively named Humane Society of the United States goes to local pet ****ters, and the organization doesn’t operate any ****ters of its own. Not that you’d learn these facts from HSUS’s ads, which are full of dogs and cats.
An examination of HSUS’s 2024 tax return (the most recent available) reveals that although the extreme animal-liberation group took in more than $130 millionin revenues, very little went to local pet ****ters. How much went to help pet ****ters in your state? Take a look at the map below (PDF). The answer may shock you.

Of its $130 million in revenues, HSUS gave less than $10,000 to help local pet ****ters care for pets in 29 states. ****ters in nine States – Alaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Nebraska, Nevada, Rhode Island, and Utah – didn’t receive a single dime from HSUS to help them care for pets.
If only 1% of HSUS’s budget goes to local pet ****ters, where Does the other 99% go? A few examples of wasteful HSUS spending:

Instead of funding the lavish lifestyles of HSUS execs who are socking away your donations in off-shore hedge funds, consider donating to pet ****ters in your area.

OPINION & ANALYSIS
The Cops Who Turned Their Backs at the NYPD Officer’s Funeral Are the Most Threatening Protesters Of All

President Barack Obama and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio publicly asked that the Funeral of fallen NYPD officer Rafael Ramos be a politics-free event. They were begging the question, of course: any issue specifically raised by both the president and the mayor is de facto politicized by virtue of such mention alone. Ramos’s death — he was one of two Cops killed in a Brooklyn ambush — was unavoidably situated in this mercurial political moment surrounding police violence and counter-violence against cops. Apolitical was never an option.

A strange point of unwitting agreement then emerged between Protesters and police. Protesters refused to pause Their politics around the funeral. Marches continued, hundreds strong in New York and beyond, and a "die-in" was staged in Grand Central station the day after de Blasio asked that they be halted. A sizable contingent of the NYPD performed its own act of political demonstration: Several hundred Cops turned their backs on the mayor as he spoke during the Funeral service for Ramos, a renewed and spectacular assertion of the view, amplified by New York’s largest police union, that the city was attacking its cops. The Protesters wouldn’t stop or pause, and nor would the police. But one of these acts of defiance was far more dangerous than the other.

The individuals who continued to protest ahead of Ramos’s Funeral were acting against claims that such demonstrations problematically disrespected the deceased officers’ mourners. As I wrote at the time, it was right that a protest movement struggling for more than an end to police impunity, but nothing short of demanding that black life be valued in this country, not be derailed by the actions of one revenge-fueled gunman.

The NYPD officers who Turned Their back arguably did a more spectacular job of derailing the Funeral service from commemorating Officer Ramos and politicizing the event. But the signification of the act is troubling, and goes beyond disrespecting De Blasio. These cops, under the auspices of Their powerful union, showed with Their bodies what they do in the face of even moderate criticism: They turn Their backs. It is without question criticism of the NYPD that they were acting out against — specifically mild and reasoned criticism from a mayor, who has also been careful to heap praise on the force, too.

Police commissioner Bill Bratton and former mayor and NYPD enthusiast Rudi Giuliani only deemed the cops’ display "inappropriate." This was more than a violation of decorum, though: hundreds of officers, led by Their representatives, brazenly dissenting from a reasonably and moderately critical city leader is a worrying display of intransigence and belief in Their own unassailable moral stance. It is a message from behind the thin blue line that those hoping to see serious change in New York policing and beyond should take to heart. In the face of disruptive popular protests after numerous police killings of unarmed black men and teens, in disregard of studies showing racist patterns of police harassment and arrests, politicians have finally responded this year to say that something must change. But what hope remains for effective reform, let alone structural change, when in the face of reasoned criticism, police dig in Their heels, claim they are under "attack" and, quite literally, turn Their backs? It is the behavior of a bully, tongue out and fingers in ears when reprimanded. But this bully is an armed force.

If police impunity accorded by the legal system is a problem, then the fraternal culture of reactionary defensiveness is a corollary obstacle to anything like justice. Consider all the police in Ferguson and elsewhere donning "I am Darren Wilson" in support of Mike Brown’s killer. This is frightening, because a force resistant to criticism is immune to change. This is the challenge that efforts to end police brutality face; banging heads against a blue wall. If police officers cannot see how they are read as a force for violence in many communities, then they can only act as enemies to those calling for an end to police violence; Cops cannot end a brutality they do not, or will not, see. Even the slightest comprehension that De Blasio’s very tepid calls for police reform may have some basis would have stopped an officer turning his or her back at that funeral. But hundreds displayed no such comprehension at all.
