Roger Moore doesn’t think Idris Elba is ‘English’ enough to play James Bond

Might Sir Roger Moore be even more politically incorrect than his old alter ego James Bond? Interviewed in the new Paris Match magazine he is asked about the widely mooted idea of black British actor Idris Elba becoming the next 007.
‘A few years ago, I said that [black actor] Cuba Gooding Jnr would make an excellent Bond, but it was a joke!’ replies Sir Roger, 87, who starred in seven Bond movies between 1973 and 1985.

‘Although James may have been played by a Scot, a Welshman and an Irishman, I think he should be “English-English”,’ he continues. ‘Nevertheless, it’s an interesting idea, but unrealistic.’
The Scot who played Bond was Sean Connery, the Welshman was Timothy Dalton and the Irishman was Pierce Brosnan. But just what is it that prevents Elba from being ‘English-English’, Roger? He was born in Hackney, raised in East Ham, schooled in Canning Town, started work in Dagenham and he supports Arsenal. How much more of an Englishman could he be? Even the fictional hero of Ian Fleming’s novels was of mixed parentage. He was born in Zurich in the early Twenties to Andrew Bond of Glencoe and Monique Delacroix, from the Canton de Vaud in Switzerland.

An interview I gave to Paris Match implies I said something racist about Idris Elba. That is simply untrue. #Lost in translation.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Multifaceted artist Geoffrey Holder has died at 84
  • The cause was complications from pneumonia
  • He was a two-time Tony winner whose career spanned theater, film, TV and publishing
  • He’s survived by his wife and son

(CNN)Geoffrey Holder, a versatile artist known for his ability as a Dancer, actor and — most famously to most of America — a pitchman for 7Up, has died. He was 84.
The cause was complications due to pneumonia, according to Charles M. Mirotznik, his family’s attorney.

Holder, who stood an imposing 6-foot-6 and had a deep, mellifluous, Caribbean-lilted voice, was a multitalented performer who easily shifted between painting, theater, film and TV. He won two Tony awards in 1975 for the musical "The Wiz," the vibrant all-black re-telling of "The Wizard of Oz." Holder earned awards for best direction and a Tony for best costume design.

With his regal stature made him an unforgettable presence on screen, as well.

Some of his more memorable work appears in 1967’s "Doctor Dolittle," 1982’s "Annie" and 1973’s "Live and Let Die," in which he faced off against Roger Moore’s James Bond as the Villain Baron Samedi. In later decades he worked with Eddie Murphy in 1992’s "Boomerang," and more recently did voice work in 2024’s "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Holder could even make a commercial sing. For TV viewers in the ’70s and ’80s, the performer was most familiar as the dapper pitchman in 7Up ads, telling viewers to sample the "Un-Cola" in his rich voice.

For someone who was renowned in so many arenas, Holder’s advertising work may have come as a surprise. But as he explained to People magazine in 1975, "I’m no snob. The commercial is an art form unto itself. After all, you are seducing people."

Holder honed his artistic gifts from an early age. Born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, in 1930, he joined his older brother’s dance troupe at the age of 7. By 1954, Holder was making his Broadway debut in the musical "House of Flowers."

He followed that up with principal dancer work with New York’s Metropolitan Opera Ballet in 1955 and 1956, and went on to star in an all-black production of "Waiting for Godot" in 1957. That same year, he was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship for painting.

On top of that, Holder was also an author: He released a ****book of Caribbean cuisine in 1973.

Holder is survived by his wife, Carmen De Lavallade, whom he married in 1955, and their son, Léo.

Rush Limbaugh has admitted to being ‘racist’ following comments he made about actor Idris Elba.

The eternally outspoken host decided to address news out of the Sony hack that Elba was being eyed to Play James Bond once Daniel Craig exited the franchise, declaring it unacceptable for a Black actor to even be considered for the iconic role of 007.

He then took it a step further by saying the idea of casting Elba as Bond, a fictional storybook spy created by author Ian Fleming, was as ridiculous as a white actor playing a Black historical figure.

Rumor: This after it was revealed that Sony executives were hoping to cast Idris Elba (above) as Bond when actor Daniel Craig leaves the franchise

‘James Bond is a total concept put together by Ian Fleming. He was white and Scottish. Period. That is who James Bond is, was,’ said Limbaugh as he began his diatribe.

‘But now [they are] suggesting that the next James Bond should be Idris Elba, a Black Briton, rather than a white from Scotland.’

The polarizing pundit then acknowledged that he was being racist, seemingly unfazed by the realization, adding; ‘That’s not who James Bond is and I know it’s racist to probably point this out.’

Limbaugh did not reveal however how he feels about Craig playing Bond, or make mention of actors David Niven, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton or Pierce Brosnan, who, while white, are not Scottish.
In fact, of the seven men to have played the smooth-talking spy over the past 50 years, only one is actually Scottish – the very first Bond, Sean Connery.

Despite these inarguable facts, Limbaugh still declared at one point during the show; ‘Fifty years of white Bond Because Bond is white. Always Scottish. Always drank vodka.’

Things then got taken a step further when Limbaugh said that casting Elba, whose phonetical name proved challenging for Limbaugh to pronounce throughout the segment, as Bond would be like casting George Clooney as President Obama or Kelsey Grammer as Nelson Mandela.

It didn’t stop there either, with Limbaugh imagining Kate Hudson playing Michelle Obama and Scarlett Johansson as Condoleezza Rice as scenarios as ludicrous as a Black man playing Bond, before capping it all off by suggesting British actor Hugh Grant playing the role of gay footballer Michael Sam is akin to Elba as Bond.

Limbaugh then declared ‘we’re just playing here,’ before moving on to his next talking point.

It is also worth noting that the self-described Bond fanatic Limbaugh’s claim that 007 ‘always drank vodka’ is also not accurate, as the spy drinks a variety of different beverages in Flemming’s novels.
