Joan Rivers was rushed to a hospital in New York City moments ago … after she stopped breathing during a surgery on her throat … TMZ has learned.

We’re told Rivers was undergoing the throat procedure in a clinic (specifically on her vocal chords) … when she stopped breathing during the surgery.

Sources say 81-year-old Rivers was rushed to Mount Sinai hospital in New York.

We’re told her daughter Melissa is on her way to New York.

She’s the Queen of Comedy, so onlookers were left wondering if what they’d just witnessed was for real or merely a set-up when Joan Rivers was Caked in the face at a party on Friday night.

The comedienne and Fashion Police host fled the QVC Red Carpet Style event shortly after making a glamorous arrival looking worse for wear with white icing smeared all over her face, in her hair and down the front of her outfit.

While the star certainly appeared shocked and angry at the turn of events, it could quite easily have been a stunt played out for the comedy value, knowing her self-deprecating sense of humour, not to mention the fact that she has a jewellery line on the home shopping network.

A well-placed source tells the MailOnline that the comic left the event in a hurry, ‘Screaming to security, "Get me to my car!"’ as security cleared a path for her.

She leapt into her vehicle followed soon after by a concerned unidentified woman dressed in a red dress, who hopped in with her before zooming off.

Plenty of fellow guests at the event took to Twitter to write of their shock at the sight of the 80-year-old bolting from the party following the incident, though no-one seems to have actually witnessed the caking take place.

Just hours earlier, Joan was in great spirits as she walked the red carpet.

The star looked stunning in loose-fitting black dress pants, a matching singlet and cropped black lace top with billowing floor-length train.

She completed her outfit with black pointy heels and a stunning pale gold necklace with onyx stone detail.

Her short blonde locks were styled in a voluminous, sleek ‘do and her make-up was prefectly applied, featuring smoky bronze eyeshadow and glossy rose lips.

Rivers told paparazzi cameras (via New York’s Daily News and TMZ) that Stewart’s lawyer contacted her lawyer over the comedian’s a passage in her upcoming book, Diary of a Mad Diva. In the humor project which debuts next month, Rivers writes:

"Many stars only do one thing well. Of course, the best one-trick-pony is Kristen Stewart, who got a whole career by being able to juggle a director’s balls."

Naturally, Stewart is upset while Rivers says it’s just a joke.

“She obviously didn’t read our disclaimer, which is that it’s a comedy book.”

Rivers closed by saying Stewart should be glad she isn’t a Kardashian — today, more specifically Khloé — because they’re mentioned “a lot more in the book” as are a number of other female celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Lena Dunham and Taylor Swift. The 81-year-old comedy veteran also said that she doesn’t care about Stewart’s legal threat, she’s going to keep the controversial passage regardless.

Ultimately, Stewart can be upset, but the truth is she was caught nuzzling her then-marriedSnow White and the Huntsman director. Sure, it was back in 2024 — but Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are still paying for their shenanigans and that was ten years ago.Settle in Stewart, it’s gonna be awhile.

Joan Rivers is scoffing at the 2 women who we Held Hostage in a Cleveland, Ohio ****ment … telling TMZ they shouldn’t complain — "They got to live rent free for more than a decade."

The women are pissed at Joan’s comments on the "Today" show this week … when she talked about her daughter’s guest room, saying "Those women in the ****ment in Cleveland had more space."

The woman — Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus — came out swinging, saying they were shocked and disappointed at the "hurtful" comment.

Joan tells us she WON’T apologize, telling them to Lighten up, adding, "One of them has a book deal. Neither are in a psych ward. They’re ok. I bet you within 3 years one of them will be on Dancing with the Stars."

And Joan says, plenty of comedians have done schtick about tragic events like Hitler’s terror and the sinking of the Titanic. Joan says, " The tv the guy gave them must not have had SNL."

Joan Rivers has always been known for making snide commentary and snarky remarks at anyone’s expense. Her most recent bout of controversial comments involves poking fun at former child star Lindsay Lohan.

Lohan, who is the star of her own reality television show on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) admitted that she had gone through a miscarriage in pregnancy in the final episode of the show. At one point during the taping of the show, Lohan admitted that, “no one knows this – I had a miscarriage for those two weeks that I took off.” Joan Rivers felt the need to make a comment and blatantly stated, “I hope she kept it,” in regards to the miscarriage, to which her daughter Melissa nervously shifted.

Rivers did not stop at this, she further went on to say, “excuse me, what do you think I am? I was born with a coat hanger in my ear.” Rivers continued to keep cracking jokes, even to the point that, when asked if she thought Lindsay Lohan would make a good mother, she replied and said, “oh, I think Lindsay would have been really a great mother. She’d have been diapering the wrong end!”

There have been some rumors circulated that suggest that Lohan made up the miscarriage story in order to gain more sympathy from people. Still, in a myriad number of ways, it Should be no surprise that Rivers cracked these jokes at the expense of Lohan herself. Lohan has been through a series of problems in the last several years, ranging from shoplifting to drug use to excessive partying and even a criminal record and some jailtime. Eventually the former “Mean Girls” star decided to check herself into rehab, which resulted in the airing of her reality show on OWN.

Kathy Griffin WILL take over from Joan Rivers as Fashion Police host

E! network has named Kathy Griffin as the new host of Fashion Police, replacing the late Joan Rivers when the show returns in January for coverage of the Golden Globes.

The couture-criticizing comedy series, which had previously aired weekly, WILL now present 17 episodes throughout2020, focusing on high-profile red carpet and Fashion events, E! announced Monday.

Fashion Police WILL welcome back panellists Kelly Osbourne and Giuliana Rancic, who WILL be joined by newcomer Brad Goreski, a Fashion stylist and lifestyle expert, who WILL replace original co-host George Kotsiopoulos.

Fashion Police has been off the air since Rivers’ death in September at age 81 after complications from throat surgery.
Joan’s daughter Melissa Rivers, who is also the executive producer of the show, said Kathy’s appointment ‘just feels right.’
She told E! ‘I’m excited to see where this panel takes this series my mother so adored in this next incarnation. Brad brings a fun, new voice to join Giuliana and Kelly in this ensemble.’

The show WILL air the day after next year’s Golden Globe awards which takes place on January 112020.
